hi, has anybody any idea on the price for digging and removal , when digging a new lake , price per acre, or how the pricing works?

I have a feeling that they don't charge "per acre" but more a hire charge for the hours, day, week etc for the digger and same with "Dumpers" etc you may need to remove the soil and dump elsewhere on the site or even removal from the site by lorry.
You may even find it cheaper on a weekend when contractors/builders are not using them and the hire company happy to just have someone using them. That is how we have done it in the past. Plus it is cheaper if you have your own operators for the digger and dumpers as you only then pay for plant hire and fuel.
If you google "How much to hire a digger" you will get some rough prices.
I may be wrong, but, it cost about £29,000 to dig a 4 acre lake, 2 diggers, 2 dumpers, 4 operators, aprox a month and that price does tie in with what I found googling "How much does it cost to dig a lake" etc. Plus it was a discounted price and also the work took longer than planned but the contractors had to comply with the contract despite wanting more to finish the job.

Civil Engineering muckshifting firms usually quote on cubic meters to be excavated.
They will take into account..
Material type...some bulks up far more than others and wet ground adds even more.
Haul distance.
Landscaping of excavated material or total removal off site.
Anticipated flooding in the case of a lake.
An hourly charge is the last thing a client wants...it's a licence to piss about.
A quote for the whole job can go vastly over budget as the contractor can claim all manner of extras.
The bigger the job, the less the cubic meter rate.
One would certainly need to see the Quantity Surveyors figures before work commenced.
A contractor would be over the moon to make 10% profit.
On a project involving water I would certainly choose a contractor who had experience and could provide
references of similar work even over a much lower tender. Once filled and any failure occurs then it becomes a
very expensive proposition to repair.

A local fishery owner once told me that all of his lakes were constructed so that there was no need to remove the spoil off site. If you wanted say a 6ft deep lake, you dug out 3ft and all of the spoil is deposited /landscaped around the edge to build up the depth to 6ft. Saves a lot of money. And years after their construction, you can't tell, they just look like a "normal" lake.

I occasionally fish the Islands Lake near Warminster and they have done just that. Each swim is a bay and you have an Island in front of you so they is no chance of anyone else casting into your swim and you aren't overlooked. The trees they planted have grown on and is a lovely little lake. Hard to believe it was a bare field only about 8 years ago and the fish and coming on well.

Interested to hear if you can dig up any piece of land and create a lake or if is there a lot more to it. Would the lakebed sediment dictate the type of eco system you would create for example? Some lakes purposely introduce weed beds and small fry whereas others might opt for aerators.

Doesn't really work like that. If the grounds a **** dig it'll totally change what can be done in a day. You'll get a ball park figure but that's all it'll be

I had a long chat with a guy who dug his own lake and runs it as a fishery. He was very clever. His test holes for the water table showed a big deposit of gravel. So he did a deal with an aggregate company. He gave them the dimensions of the lake. They dug it for a greatly reduced rate on the understanding they could keep all the gravel they extracted. Win win.

lancashire, it was a family member looking at buying land with the sole aim to make a fishery- due to all the local lakes and clubs brimming with people, thinking there might be a possible good longterm investment, but from what i hear, alot of fisherys dont get the returns they wished for, and alot of the ones that are quids in, was dug on lands already owned by farming familys , so much less outlay
