I'm considering a different approach this spring and really fancy using sprouted seeds/peas/beans etc. The available nutrition from sprouts seems a sensible way to improve a simple approach. Any one have any thought on for and against and whether the sprouts need blanching before use..

You got acres and acres of land, otherwise it would seem like a huge waste of time and effort just for a few handfuls of bait when you could otherwise just go and buy what you need?

As for the nutritional value, much like ultra high quality baits....huge waste of time. You only have to look at how successful Cell is which constantly caches and.catches. The same I'd wager goes for shop bought particles and home grown. Like a well known angler recently said 'they eat their own s-hit'.

Concentrate on finding them and consistently feeding them shop bought particles and you'll soon be hauling.

I have often thought of doing this myself, in theory it should release more nutrients from inside the seed. Definitely need boiling before use though.

Lol, plenty of fields round me...I can sprout maples in a bucket in 5ish days and a bit less for the smaller seeds so space really isn't a concern. As for nutrition, the ffaa and simple sugars available during sprouting make them a better option than standard particles, which no doubt work but I'm just thinking a little bit further.

Bit of biology. All seeds need to germinate is water provided the temperature is not too low. Everything else needed for growth is contained in the seed mostly in the form of starch. This starch is converted into sugars which is what the new tender plants are mostly made of in the initial few days of growth. Barley is a good example, germinate it, heat it and dry it to kill the seeds, now have malted barley, dissolve the sugar in hot water, add yeast, sugar into alchohol= beer.
Unless you are going to use the germinated seedlings whole and live I can't see the point and there is evidence to suggest that germinated and growing seeds can damage fish. Hence the need to properly prepare particles.
If you cook them I reckon all you will get is a a bit of mush, husks and a lot of sweet water with some minerals.
You could try malted barley soaked in cold water. Can't see the point, prepare boiled particles and let them start to ferment and get sweet, sticky and gooey. Job done. Imho.

I'm sure I have seen this written about somewhere by Rod Hutchinson it may have been in the Carp strikes back or George Sharmans Carp and the carp angler.

Great post, thanks. I'm interested in why you think the sprouts would be harmful to the fish as obviously I don't want to take any chances. I'm guessing your talking about toxin potential?

Something I read a long time ago and never followed up on. I've never personally felt the need to move away from soaked and/or boiled seeds. I could be wrong or out of date but as I understood it, large amounts of raw particles, which germinated seeds would be, can cause digestive problems and weight loss in fish. Worth checking up on.

I get what you mean, anti nutrients like phytase can be a problem in raw particles (Google is my friend) but these are dramatically broken down during sprouting as well as protease inhibitors so may well be some mileage in experimenting with a few bits.
Are you sure?
