I'm sure many of you have at some time turned to fishing a small runs water in order to get some takes during the colder months.

But as a lot of those waters have rules on what can't be used etc. I just wondered how you would go about tackling it.

One such water I visit has no weed but a silty bottom and 3 rules that appear to rule out most of my tied up rigs and the way I would normally prefer to tackle it.

1. No braided hook lengths.
2. Maximum size 10 hook.
3. Barbless hooks only.

How would tackle such a venue abiding to the rules but still confident you are presenting a decent bait during the colder months.

Simple mono rig with either a d style loop or go old school and tie a braided hair to the hook.
Maybe a method feeder with short mono hooklink too.

As.no night fishing is allowed, i would probably fish a ledger float for days only fishing. i.e Polaris or similar.....just because you fishing for carp doesn't mean you cant fish with a float...

How big are the fish? Fishing with quivertips with a matching mono hooklink and side hooked corn should do the business. The quivertip will tell you if they are feeding on your spot too, something bite alarms won't accurate show. I would also recast every 5mins to get a baited area going. If no bites within about half an hour, try a different spot. Depending on how prolific the place is, I doubt they'll be moving around much.

For some reason it's unstoppable. Moved over to pink around 15 years ago and it was amazing how much better it was

nothing in those rules that will stop you catching carp if they are there fella

cold weather - try a feeder full of maggot with a little cluster on a size 12. short hooklength to keep things tight. alternatively a bit of breadflake fished off bottom. stands out lovely in cold clear water and will rise above the silt. I'm yet to find a carp 'runs' water where one of the above won't get you a bite...

good luck!

I fish a water like this myself.
Usually on one rod I fish a single bottom bait with a single bait PVA stringer, and on the other rod a hi-attract pop-up, which I tend to change to try to find fish.

Rigwise it is a simple mono knotless knotted hook for the bottom bait, and a D-rig for the pop-up.

So judging from the replies - just do what you'd normally do, with whatever rig you normally use

Maximum size 10 hook? How big are the carp? Good grief, with that and a barbless rule, I'd go somewhere else if I were you. Some of these noddy carp puddles can be fun to fish, but many are run by very clueless people.

On a runs water where I can fish properly? Usually only two rods is all you need, fishing three on waters where you're catching lots of fish is unnecessary IMO and it's bad enough getting two at once, let alone three! I usually fish tigers if allowed and start with the margins, unless there's a very definite feature to fish to or I am seeing a lot of movement in open water. I would not fill the place in with bait until runs are coming steadily - God knows what these idiots who keep on spodding when they aren't catching think they're doing... just build up the bait as the action increases. I also find just fishing hook baits or small stringers on runs waters in winter is very effective. I have a couple of these places to go at that aren't too far away - on a really good day, you can easily get over 20 doubles and the odd 20+. I do like to have the occasional day on them, just to keep my eye in between sessions on my two syndicate waters.

With those rules it sounds more like a match lake rather than a carp runs water. I wouldn't even bother taking carp rods to a venue like that.
Are you sure?

This action cannot be undone.
