I listened to the Xmas pod cast by Nash today and Kevin commented that logic tells you the Umbrella is dead. Just wondered if you feel that's on the books?

Yes we have the Hides and Biv's but still feel there's room for the umbrella systems...

Having both the mhr wychwood brolly and the tempest air, I can't see me ever using the wychwood again.
The tempest is too easy to use and offers better protection.

I'd say so, yes..The Tempest and Hide are so easy to put up. Put a few poles together and there up and standing.No faffing around trying to screw and push in storm poles.

Saying that there is just something about an umbrella that is so just carp fishing they will always have there diehard fans. If I was ever to go back to an umbrella it would have to be something like the ESP Lo Pro which is the only real free standing umbrella out there.

I still like a small light brolly for a day session. Just required to keep the wind off your back and the rain off your head. Small enough to squeeze a chair and luggage under with a bit of space to make a brew. I'd much rather take my fast n light copy for a day session than my tempest.

Until someone makes a full open fronted, 50" central block system, an atom sized hide etc, then a brolley will remain my shelter of choice.

A 45" normal brolly when barbel fishing (non sleeping).
a small korum compact brolly with sides for summer/autumn overnights.
a fox evo bivvy (no wrap) as my main bivvy, but still versatile with fully open front, sides or door down.

Brollys a lot easier too stand up in the garage and let dry.

Personally, I've just moved over from a pram hood style shelter to a 55" brolly system. I don't know why I didn't do it sooner, its faster to put up, lighter and I have far more options for fronts etc.

have 2 and use them in 80% I would say, probably 100% when fishing alone.

nashy should bring out an updated oval brolly and canvas overwrap, would sell shed loads.

proper heavy duty wraps would be nice.
they couldnt sell you in another one in 18 months time....

I recall Nash saying the brolly was dead before, didn't stop him relaunching various ranges of Hog,GroundHog,Profile,H-gun,Scope, oval brollies since his original statement?
The problem with Nash (& a few other manufacturers) is this “Emperors new clothes” idea telling the buying public what they should be using?
Yes, the Tempest/Hide are great shelters but I think there will always be a market for the humble brolly for day trips/short sessions, in my opinion.
It annoys me, on the odd occasion on a day trip,that I set up my ancient A-lite for a bit more cover or my daughter comes with me, when people ask if I'm doing the night? Never get that with a brolly..

Manufacturers will always tell you what you think you need. Without stating the obvious. Much to personal
preference at the end of the day. Many anglers have a few shelters to cover all bases. I hate stuff being discontinued as spares is always hard to come by. Be nice if all manufacturers agreed to produce one or two shelters and kept it like that. With replacement groundsheet etc available if needed couple of seasons later.

This season I have gone back to an umbrella system. I prefer the size and profile of them, and now I have somewhere I can put the wireless and get a decent signal
