Looking at getting two new reels to accompany a set of 12ft 3.5 TC rods.
Which reel would be more appropriate, the 5500 or the 14000?
Want the reel to compliment the rod as well as comfortably fishing 120 yards max.

I have both 14000 and 5500 Ci4 Ultegra's. If I was buying again would just go for the 5500

I'm sure you would hit 120yds with the 5500 , but with 3.5lb rods you may as well get the 1400 , will be easier and possibly better balanced, and if you need any extra distance you have the capability.

I have 3.25 rods with the ci4 5500 12lb line, I was quite surprised I could hit 100 yards with a 2.5oz lead, with a good chuck I reckon I would do 120 yards. So you may not need the 1400s

Better drag, better line lay, standard washers are crap in most reels get a Carbon washer set

You wont really gain anything by getting the 14000's the 5500 will cast just as far. I did a test a few years ago with a black mag and a castizm on identical 3.25 hi s rods and there was no difference in how far i could cast.

Never a truer word spoken, I made this mistake, I was even going to chuck them in and get some new ones until I got the sound advice to strip a load off. Helped no end!

The 14000 will balance a 12ft 3.5lb rod loads better than the 5500, i use the 5500 on 10ft'ers and would want a bigger reel on a longer rod for sure.

Wanting to fish 120's and 3.5lb rods i would definitely go for the 14000's i have big pit shimano's and the 5500 ci4's if you can cast well the 14000 do cast further especially with thicker line.
I have done various comparison tests upto 100yds probably not much in it but with lines of around 0.35 and upwards the bigger the diameter line the spool empties quicker and increases drag over the spool lip on the smaller spool slowing the casts down

Really appreciate all the advice and comments. Picked up a pair of 14000's this afternoon and I think they are going to be just what I need
