Hello everyone hope your all doing well in this current crisis just wondering if any of you use a pick up truck for your carp fishing gear. Currently looking at a ford ranger with the canopy on the back only issue I can see is fitting the rods in the back so may need to downsize to some 10ft creepers. Any advice would be great.
I've got a ranger without the high canopy - just a roll top cover and you can just about get 12ft two piece rods across the angle.
I use scopes for most of my fishing so don't have to worry too much
If you have the high canopy you will be fine as you will have more of an angle if that makes sense.
Take your rods to your local ford dealer - that's what I did to check before buying!

I bought my Mazda pickup twenty years ago and went from dealership to dealership with my rodholdall checking that it would fit. The poor guy at Toyota was virtually in tears, he just couldn't believe that I wasn't interested in the Hilux because the rods wouldn't fit lol.
Definitely check as back then most double cab trucks wouldn't take 12ft two piece rods.
The Truckman tops are excellent from a space and weather protection point of view, but security is debatable at best.
A couple of mates have had the roller shutter type covers and both have said that they are as waterproof as a sieve.
My Mazda has been the best vehicle I've ever bought.

i had an l200 (09 plate) raging bull edition.
great truck and great in the mud even with road tires.
mine had the standard size flat bed - and my rod holdall (12ft rods) wouldnt fit in the flat bed even diagonally - so had to recline the passanger seat for the rods...
flat bed had a lifting hinged cover on gas shocks - which was great to just chuck all the wet gear into after a session - but having to put the rods in the cab? waste of time ...
sold it and got a van
incidently - then got the van stuck in the mud a few times
now got a 15 plate shogun - loads of room and wont get stuck!! best of both worlds

Mate had a Nissan Navara and standard 12ft rods on a holdall was a total pain in the arse as with a full canopy, thay had to go in diagonally.
Great when it was his turn to drive to France, not !
Unless I had a work purpose for a pick up truck, I would never contemplate one.

I had a hilux and the 12ft rod hold-all fit diagonally across the back. However for the size of the vehicle you couldn't fit that much in. Had a truckman box on the back and it if rained and the car was pointing down a hill, the rain used to come in and and make the tackle wet.
Sold it now and got a transit connect. Although this is a smaller vehicle. I can get far more fishing gear in it.

Gotta agree. I've got a lwb/hi roof connect and I can get my rods in diagonally no problem, and that's with them on top of all my work gear that's piled in it. If they we actually on the floor pointing up and not piled on boxes they'd go a piece of piss

I did go and look at a few pick ups now im in scotland as alot of access to lochs are down forrestry tracks , couldnt fit my tackle in properly in most of them without it being a struggle to get it back out , especially with a box on ! Bought a newer peugeot partner van in the end lots more room way cheaper running costs , servicing and parts when needed.

If my mondeo was 4x4 it would be perfect. Loads of room, comfy, quick enough, loads of toys. Pity it gets stuck on a wet leaf.
