It's that time of the year.. I have a Titan deep freeze but I really don't find it very good.
I put 3 cool blocks in it and only chilled items, open it as little as possible but the blocks barely last 24 hours, sometimes not even that.
Someone mentioned the Speero modular cool bag on here, are there any others I should be looking at?
Torn between a hard cooler or a cool bag, bag may be easier to carry around etc as long as they are as good for cooling.
20-30 litres I think should be enough, don't really want a yeti / iceytek etc, very expensive and get really mixed reviews even for the ones that are £200+
There's a few random branded ones on ebay, vevor etc but not sure what they are like.
Carplife do one that looks OK but haven't ever seen any reviews.
Don't particularly want a fishing branded one, they are usually not great and over priced!

Really rate my Korda compac cooler,I put three bottles of frozen flavoured water in it.My food stays cold and after 48hrs one of my bottles still has ice in it.

Yep Korda compac cooler is the one I use . I put a 2 litre bottle of frozen water in the bottom and keeps everything cold over a 48 hour period

Igloo are really good. Also those cool pack things aren't very good, freezing a bottle of water is a much better way of keeping things cold for longer

Really?! I'll have to try the frozen bottles. Always presumed the cool packs were better as they were designed for that function!
And thanks for other suggestions, I don't really want a Korda one if honest. Don't own anything Korda and would like to ideally keep it that way 😂

100% use frozen water bottles the ice packs are crud

I've found the Coleman one to be pretty good - providing you ‘pre-cool' it you'll get a good 3 days with it being properly cold still.

I've had the Korda one and now have the Fox one
They both perform equally as well
I bought some square 2ltr water bottles and use these instead of cool packs
I done a 72hour session 2 weeks ago and still had ice in both bottles when I got home

Have a search for the Mountall cooler..it's pretty much identical to the Korda cooler (apart from a few extra straps) and only £59..

If you have a Costco near you, they have Igloo cool boxes on offer at the moment.
Failing that, I've bought a Dometic Cool Ice 22l, carpy green for the tackle tarts and much much better than the eva Fox Camolite ones. In fact, puts them to shame. If you shop around you can get them for less than £90 and will last a lifetime.

Got the 20lt Fox cool bag, bought 6 of those thin A4 sized cool packs and basically line the box/bag, you dont lose much space doing this. Keep the opening and closing to a minimum and this will keep stuff right for upto 3 days.

Thats why bottles are better you can have a bottle with the same volume as a flat pack, it will have less surface area therefore stay cooler longer ... plus you can drink them once theyve defrosted if ur on a longer sesh.
By freezing water in a bottle shape, which is essentially a thick tube, the rate at which it takes on energy/heat is slower. Therefore, the speed at which it releases its energy/cold air is slower too, making it last longer and keeping your box cooler for longer.

I use the Speero bag for up to 3 night and an Icetek for longer, I also use the Iceytek gel packs and a large on will lay flat in the Speero bag.

initially I thought if the Ice packs you bought contained thick liquid they would last the longest
but in the end 1.5 /2 LITRE bottle of water frozen lasts a LOT longer THAN any OF THE ICE PACKS and bonus is of course its a good way of carrying your water

in the end bottles of frozen water then if your on a french trip every 3rd day pop to the supermarket and buy a 2 bags of ice I have kept bait and food frozen for weeks on my trips that sometimes were a month at a time

I'd like to chime in and state that ice packs staying frozen means nothing. If they are staying frozen, it means that the heat in your cooler isn't bean transfered to them. The real test would be to measure the actual temperature of the cool bag/box.
The fact the water bottle stays frozen for so long is just because its very inefficient at absorbing the energy from your cooler.

Speero Modular is probably about 16-20l at a guess - its has really thick side walls but they're soft so it can be overloaded if necessary. Size wise its very similar to the Trakker NXG Compact Carryall (NOT the Compact Barrow Bag!) so not big at all IMO. One thing I really like is the ability to carry a 2 pint milk carton upright without getting squished so ideal if you drink lots of T . . .its cooling retention is also excellent and as stated better than standard 'foil lined' soft cool bags and the hard-walled Coolabox. Pockets are large and means I now don't carry several separate bags for cook-kit / gas / stove / accessories etc

A sheet or block of ice will melt quicker than a cylindrical shaped block of ice of equal volume due to exposed surface area. A cylinder shape has a smaller surface area than a block (volume equated). Larger surface area means more of the volume is exposed the the warm of the surroundings... therefore it will melt faster. Flat pack ice blocks are sold because they save space..... but at the expense of cooling properties against that of a cylindrical bottle. Obviously this is the case for water....if the ice packs are gel then thats different as the thicker viscosity allows for longer thawing time.
Frozen bottles give you the added advantage of being able to drink them towards the end of the session.

I did wonder about the 'better' cool packs, igloo do some, think they are called max cold packs and they are a gel rather than a liquid.

This looks really good to be fair and as it's black you can get away with it not being from a tackle company. Some of the bright coloured ones aren't the one are they! Might have to give this a go for the money.

The thing I find with all cool boxes is that nobody (in my opinion and search) actually looks at the most common problem - every cup of tea or coffee you have you open 1/6th minimum of the box and let out cold and hot in, a double lid so you could easily grab milk would keep more cold in or a partition etc.

Fox camolite low level cooler has a seperate compartment you can put milk in withought having to open the main compartment all the time. Insulated aswell. There are a few others like this I just cant think what they are off the top of my head..... but they do exist.

Do you not find it goes off? I tried a stainless thermos, and I'd find within a day it had gone off. For some reason it turns faster than when just in the bottle.

but I guess I've missed something as I thought the milk was for hot drinks. Doubt it'd be cold by adding a cube (even get tiny) cube trays.

Hi. Just get a Coleman xtreme cool box 28QT, it'll easily out perform the coolbags. Just put in 2 x 1L frozen bottles of water in the bottom.
After two days the bottles will still be frozen at approx 50% if you keep the lid closed as much as possible. even in the recent hot weekends.
Well worth the investment imo.

Yes - I have seen those and pretty useless I meant an actual hard box.
Flasks I do use a lot and if you get a decent one, poor half the milk in put on its side and freeze it, then top up with cold milk and you get a few days out of it, they are better as opposed to boxes you are only opening a small part of the bottle.

I alway use semi skimmed BUT IT MUST BE FILTERED Cravendale or the supermarkets own version if you check the dates on the packs you will see its always normally a couple of weeks
