Personally I think a spomb goes further. My old spomb in 12ft I could get the midi x or nash dot spod the furthest. Current 13ft rod needs the large to compress the rod

I'm not the best caster but find the Wolf wobbles in flight more than a standard Dot spod - Dot spod also opens more consistently on a variety of landings (more margin for error)

Large spomb for me. They can go absolutely miles if they are heavy enough and as long as you give them a good shake to make them nose heavy, they are pretty stable

Alien spod or Korda skyraider for me. Fly straight, drop bait every time and go miles with the right setup.

I'm in the medium Spomb camp on my Marker/Spod rod, or a big Spomb if I'm using my Big Bertha (still) with mono and a Greased Weasel leader.
There are a couple of tricks to getting it to open every time, especially with braid, with mono and a leader it's not so bad..
Make sure no bait gets in the nose catch. (That can cause premature ejaculation or not open at all).
If you are hitting the clip, aim high so it drops down on its nose rather than flattening out.
If you do need to hit the clip hard, pull the rod back after casting to just behind vertical, and as it hits it pulls the rod forward, dropping onto the nose.

Spomb for me medium size for distance never had a problem with them not opening only time they don't open is when you hit the clip to hard they flatten out, wolf one does not fly as true as the spomb an takes distance off in my opinion.

Currently fishing 166 yards with a 13ft rod and dot spod. Could have maybe gone 170ish as I had a slight trailing wind. If you can match the spod weight to the rod it makes life loads easier.
And like said below if it's feeling too heavy it will just limit you. That's where a stiffer 13ft rod will cope better

Big Bertha was a pig of a rod.
Very powerful but so hard to compress it soon becomes very tiring to use.
And you are spot on wrt getting the spomb to drop straight down to ensure more consistent opening.

There were a couple of versions of Big Bertha, I got the DD version, and yes, she needs a lot of weight to get the best out of her. A full big Spomb I guess weighs around 12oz, I'd probably usually be ½ to ¾ full.
I could bait up from the sailing club on the Central Lagoon to the bar in front of Long Island in front, and from the inflow to the plateau around 100metres from memory.
A lot of baiting up at Alton Water could also be at long distance. I reckon that at low water a couple of years ago when the causeway was dry it was 200metres across, I was hitting halfway easily when I checked marker vs Spomb and spod.
I used to be very fit, so didn't get too tired, but yes, she could make you ache if you had to put a lot of bait out.
