I need help for a change so if possible YOUR thoughts please folks big smile !

been helping an elderly mate recently retired starting back up after 30 years
and my mission is to find him a spod reel CHEAP but good ! dont need big capacity only 100yards casting range would be plenty

I`ve narrowed it down to 2 reels ON AMAZON
CANT SEE ANY DETAILS OF THE WEIGHTS THOUGH ?

If i could i would give you an easy linky poo, but it says 622 grams on the sonik site.

And the okuma is slightly heavier with 665 grams: https://www.marcosportshop.com/en/okuma-custom-spod-cs-7000s

Now the question is, is this with or without the braid:P

I don't think those prices can be beaten, but surely something lighter must be around. Maybe not a dedicated carp spod reel.

On a sidenote, really like sonik always putting weight of the item in question on their site, thus i remembered.

AS THEY ONLY had 1 Okuma in stock I bought it as its Amazon its fairly easy to return if he is not happy lol

and both reels are on Amazon for those prices

only ordered it thu night,it turned up saturday morning...cant ask for better than that to be fair.
I'm using it on a 10ft spod/ utility rod. reel seems well enough made,braid seems decent. for 40 quid even if I get 2 seasons out of it

braid is spot on, spooled nicely,sits nice on the reel and nice and limp,I've put a shovkleader on it and it's knotted spot on

no need,it's spooled slightly under the lip,the amount for the drop and 6 turns on the reel won't affect it

It's fairly quick to be honest perfect for marking and spombing.
Used mine on Friday and was a pleasure to use.The braid was great got no wind knots and got the bait out no problem still blanked thou🤣

Erics angling use to sell a spod reel for around £35 years back, they were decent reels but cant think of the name (Possibly Mitchell), I've still got 2 in the garage for sea fishing

Just putting one on a spod and one on a marker rod, my normal 12 footers.
They seem OK, although the drag on one is a little quicker (from locked to free) so that's fine for my marker rod, but it might be an issue if someone was looking to use them for fishing with.
My marker and spombing won't be more than 100yds so they should easily do that range. I have just put some shockie on.
The handle folds down nice and compact for transport. The handle is only plastic so hopefully its robust enough...
They are 110g lighter than the shimano aerlex xta 7000 spod reel.
I'm guessing they have been spooled on a machine so it remains to be seen if the line lay remains as good once it's in use.

Mitchell Avocast 7000 black edition. Recently bought one for £45. Bit on the heavy side though but comes with folding handle.

First time out with the okuma custom spod 7000 reels and they seem OK.
I have had issues with the supplied braid though...
Several frap ups on the spomb rod (that went through the rod eyes) and have taken an age to unpick, and finally a frap on the marker rod that cracked off the shock and the float

I did wet the spools before casting, and also when the spomb was out in the lake.
I was only fishing to 50 yards.
Maybe when these reels are loaded by machine they don't maintain enough tension in the line?
The spools don't seem too overfilled, but maybe I need to strip a bit off


I will be removing the braid line using a drill and a spare spool, the then put it back on with no slack to help prevent future issues.

There isnt much in it.
The spool is slightly wider than my daiwa emblem 5000t, but slightly less deep.
The spools were very similar to the shimano aerlex xtb10k spod reels that I had.

I think a longer spool helps but then defeats the object of a smaller reel.

I put about 60 spombs out last session and it was fine.. maybe uou were just unlucky,or I was lucky🤷‍♂️

Maybe just inconsistencies when filling the spools. They must be done on a machine, I can't see them having a little chinese 10 year old with a left arm like Popeye doing it

I say spombs,it was dot spods so not big, 2.rods 15 spombs each rod on arrival,15 spombs each rod before bed..if you don't put the bait in they turn up,eats what's there and drift off as quick..

I have just took about 80 yards of braid off each reel to calm the frap down.
I emptied the first spool to see if it had backing on but it was the supplied braid all the way down, maybe 300m at a guess.
