Big fish kill on his major stock lake, reckons it will bankrupt him?
Whilst i feel sorry for the guy ,with all his experience , should he now have had measures in place to jump into action on any likely hood of an oxygen crash.

He did, but unfortunately was not enough. Terrible news for fishing, his new super scaleys are something else. If you've not seen them take a look...hopefully he recovers, I'm sure he has more stock elsewhere but it is s.*** no getting around it.

I'm in a fishery management group with Mark and several times he's mentioned having really really high d.o. levels. These will only be caused by algae blooms, which means you're living (well your fish are) on a knife edge.
With such an operation I'm gobsmacked that he didn't have an 'over the top' number of aerators ready to go when such a situation arose.

Those high d.o. levels are due to the algae, and will also indicate the reverse is also happening at dawn.
It's a big shame but...

As terrible as it is, it does sound like a case of not having the correct preventative measures in place. I'll be alright, it wont happen to me kind of thing.

When you lease waters here there and everywhere hours from home then you'll never be in the right place at the right time. The bloke comes across as a bit of a chancer in the Korda podcasts. Nothing ever went to plan when I dealt with him.

Imagine this happening to any other livestock farmer on such a large scale ,even if the animals are to be killed the welfare still has to be thought about .Sounds almost negligence ,I don't think he's doing himself any favours shouting it from the rooftops via social media .
Failure to prepare, prepare to fail... Its survival of the smartest I'm afraid.

Just because the guy has a record for breeding some carp Don't put the guy on some sort of god like pedestal , read the post about the fishery management group he new he was skating on thin ice . Chancer and this time the gamble didn't pay off and unfortunately the livestock suffered and died !

Whilst we will never know if aeration would have saved them if it was turned on what has been said is that John at Fishers Pond fisheries lost a shed load of fish in their ponds with 8 paddle wheel aerators running, same area that Simmo farms his fish and neither of them got away lightly.

Might give other fish farmers and fisheries a kick up the backside to upgrade their kit to cope with more demanding conditions moving forward in the future. This sort of weather isn't a one off, it'll become the norm. Climate change before your very eyes.
Now imagine we have another dry and mild winter this year, I don't think anyone is prepared for that, even multi billion pound water companies, let alone the mere fish farmer.

I'll be fishing tonight probably for the Cats while I'm there, as there's a much more important reason to be there over-night – to man and fuel the Pumps, as tomorrow with the sudden drop in temp and possible rain it's the perfect set of conditions for stratification/inversion and the consequent total fish kill to occur.
Prevention is better than a disaster, if possible.
19th of July this was posted by me Gerry, it was blatantly obvious to anyone involved with fish farming/stillwaters to be on guard in the next couple of weeks, even with two powerful Pumps (One I have is a converted Fire Hydrant Pump!) you still think in the back of your mind "Have I done enough?"
I don't think you ever can, I'm already on the hunt for some even more powerful equipment for next summer, might never get used - but it's there when required, a mate of mine has large Pumps in storage most of the time - he hires them out to the EA when they can't cope, as happened a few years back when 12 waters "Inverted" all at the same time one July morning.

Wasnt exactly a freak oxygen crash Gerry, people saw it coming hence people like Keith being at his place ready for it. Someone like simmo really should have been more than adequately prepared for it. The cost of a few aeriators is insignificant compared to the stock he has now lost

WOW, first thing that comes to mind is “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.” Do you really think after year upon year of temperature records being broken that anyone needs prompting to prepare for the worst? Are you really that stupid to think you can occupy the moral high ground and think you can retort to insults?

I'm sure many of us have other hobbies, but for some reason out of all of them carp fishing seems to attract the bitter and envious more than any other. I'm not sure if it's because it only requires a low IQ, opposable thumbs, a remote control and a credit account to catch big fish these days, but if this forum is anything to go by it can be a toxic group.
Say what you like about Simmo, but nobody deserves to lose their livelihood in this way. He's probably put more smiles on anglers faces than most and built a successful business doing it. Yet a group of armchair experts salivate at the opportunity to kick a man who was previously in an envious position while he's down.
