Hi all,
Looking at buying some new reels and cant decide between the new Ultegra 14000 xte's or older Ci4+ 14000 xtc
The new ones are cheaper but are they better? any recommendations would be much appreciated.

I sold my ci4 14k's ( less than a year old and well cared for ) due to them being noisy and just not worth the money.
I upgraded to sonik tournos 10k's and its been a revelation.

I got a good price for the ci4 14k's and do not regret it at all. Maybe getting a set of power aero's to start with would have been a better idea..... who knows. The tournos reels are great though. Yep, brand slaves won't get it but so what.

Been using the ultegra XSE now for a few weeks...
Incredible reels, nice clutch , full turn open close..supersmooth..
Big thumbs up.

Nope still crap felt washers, I ended up with the new Daiwa 45 Sd, funny thing the Daiwa is 45g heavier than the shimano XTE but feels lighter and more balanced under the rod.
And what a drag on the the 45 SD, waited to long for that upgrade

Much slower, a full.turn from open to close.
Had most high end reels, most techniums, all Daiwa basias, etc..these do everything.
Washers are a personal thing,i prefer felt. Much more room for adjustment on a clutch.
A proper lineguard, great line lay and great clutch.

Be interesting to see how these fair long term as of the new technologies from what i can see silent drive is effectively rubber o-rings that sit against the outside edge of the idle gears thus eliminating slack/noise in the idle gears. They have altered the design of one of the plastic idle gears which now has a captive edge. Theres now a bushing in the rotor nut but essentially the internal design doesn't differ that much from the previous ultegra Ci4's. I think the biggest problem with previous standard ultegras was the poorly designed line guard which could lift out of the runners, twist then if reeled down upon it puts massive pressure on the wormshaft and idle gears , shearing teeth in some cases although I've seen no Ci4 versions with this issue so fingers crossed they continue this trend.

After defending the ultegra ci4's drag my 5500 started sticking last week so I ordered some ice washers which I've just fitted. The standard washer are neither carbon or felt, they are plastic so now wondering what's in my Technium 1200xtb mgs, will have to have a look.

Strange thing is the ci4's aren't anywhere near as old as the tec's and the drag on them is silky smooth at the moment. The ultegra's were v good then suddenly turned snatch and one would stick after tightening to cast. Hope the ice washers sought it out but the fitting instructions says to leave them tightened down for 24 hours before use.

I use XTD Spod reels for boat fishing as they're tough, cheap and have good retrieve. As you say, the drag is sticky after you loosen a tight clutch. I put this down to them using cheap parts as it's a Spod reel, although I do use 14000 spools.
I've ordered a set of Weston caps to try on them.

If the drag is sticky on the XTD spod reel change the washers in the spool as they are the grease felt washers in them as standard put the future fishing ice washer in the spool in place of the grease felt washers will sort it out

Thanks for the heads up, the Weston caps come with carbon washers so I'll put those in. Happy to replace the standard cap to be honest, the plastic one that comes with the reel is cheap and nasty.
They will be a bit of a Frankenstein but the crank is great for pulling 8oz leads in 200m +

Seems a big difference with the Xtd felt washers (the ones on the XTD are alot tinner) + The XTD and XTE spool is not waterproof so there is a chance that the felt washers can dries out

This meaningless fad for quick drag has spoiled,albeit temporarily, many a good reel,just as the meaningless fad for 50mm ringing on the rods.
No true baitrunner model has such limited adjustment

That's what I like about my new Daiwa 45 SD 1 full turn from free spool tension to fighting drag + 1 full turn for completly closed, with the Shimano it was 1 turn from open to fully closed with the washers, you miss so many drag points...

Thats because the felt washers are compression washers which is what gives them more adjustment over non compression ptfe, carbon etc.
I still have felt washers in my xt techs still very smooth after all these years

It's not just the washer material that determines the drag, the spool cap itself has a major effect. A lot of the modern caps are solid while in the past many were spring loaded which I believe works well with carbon, ptfe while solid works best with felt.

Yes the cap makes a big difference my techs have a solid bush as standard rather than a spring. I did try some carbon washers in one spool but with the standard cap it was awful the only way to make them feel ok (to me) was to put a spring in the spool cap
I do think a spring can cushion and smooth the drag, but i just went back to felt washers all round with the standard bushed cap which i think works well with my reels.
i have messed with my old daiwa emblem reels and tournies, took the spring out of the cap and fitted non compression washers it make them so fast they are awful, the spring in the daiwa spools is softer than the springs i have found in some ultegra models and this soft spring with daiwas 5 felt washers does make a very slow drag i find it better to either change the washers or replace the spring for a bush.
The only reason i can see a drag this quick is possibly on a marker reel
