Hello,

Looking for some advice on some new line.
Always used Shimano Catana but after using my last spool I am looking for a replacement and have narrowed it down to either Ultima Power Carp or ESP Syncro XT.

Anyone have any experience with either?

Used both,ESP for me

Catana was superb but syncro is nearly as good. Im yet to find any other line that will make me change from syncro xt.

12lb or 15lb version?

Ultima power carp used to be alright but is now the single worst monofilament line I have ever used. taken off after two nights.

15lb ESP Syncro for me as well brilliant line. Just make sure you purchase just the xt and not the loaded.

I tested Ultima Lines years ago, absolutely awful, on both centrepin and fixed spool reels.

Line twist was terrible, which was so bad it lead to breakages. It lasted 2 sessions before it was replaced.

The amusing thing was I was given the line by the Ultima Rep, and asked to review it. He didn't like what I told him!

I've been using power carp xr again, that doesn't seem as good as it was but I still prefer it to synchro, I just couldn't get on with that

I found 12lb syncro pretty poor to be honest.
Frayed alot and kinked, moved onto korda now which is alot better

Another user of the Syncro XT 15lb (non loaded version) here and have found it great so far. In my opinion, it behaves much better when wet, so a quick cast/splash/spray first while setting up, helps for me.

I like you was a Catana user and fan and struggled to find a line that came close eventually I tried ESP Syncro XT
and still on it its IMHO the best all round mono available
its never let me down and landed me a LOT ! of very big French carp it casts well its got brilliant abrasion resistance too

but hated the loaded version not as strong coily horrible stuff in comparison

Would you say it is equal to Catana or better?

Used to love a bit of ultima, like the others repooled not long ago and it was awful stuff.
Found a spool a few years old on a draw and used that and it was much better.
Main line i use now is gt-hd in 15lb.
Does everything i want and bombproof.

NO Catana was better

but this is the best I have found and trust me I have tried most

I've got a few unopened spools of catana somewhere in the tackle shed, might stick em on the bay in a decade see if they do what the flavours of old did lol. for what its worth I believe TA OGX is much better than catana was

Catania ages extremely poorly and once it reaches a certain age deteriorate quickly and snaps like cotton, was a great line but never kept it on for long enough for it to deteriorate.

Took about a meter off a spool this morning and have to say I disagree, it seems perfectly fine, spooled up a stalking reel to save my OGX lol

Referring to it in use, used to change it every year but once left it and half way through the next year it suddenly started snapping on all three spools. Had technium on spares so used that and never went back to catana.
