Good afternoon all , I wanted to ask if any of you folks have used Belachan to any degree in your Angling ?
I'm thinking of using it in pellet, liquid form as part of a spring / summer solid bag tactic .
The water im fishing is a park and as you can imagine sees all the same tactics year in year out .
I'd like to try a complete different and subtle approach and with a bait that I've not seen or heard any one use .
I'd be grateful for all of your experiences and opinions.. good or bad .
Thanks I'm advance

Bread is always a good bet on a park lake, and very few carp angers use it. You could try PVA bags of white bread crumb mixed with grated belachan block?

Many go down the bread and white boilie route and as a result I've seen fish spook off bright baits and even freelined bread flake . Also the water is clearer than gin , that's why I want to be very subtle .
Thanks for the idea though and replying

A "boilie wash" made from a grated block mixed with warmed up fish sauce ( squid brand ) and a sugary liquid such as molasses is superb for spring, also, grated into hemp once its finished cooking and still hot is a winner.
Smells is somewhat unique, some might say not suitable for civilised society, but it works in spring BIG TIME and always will.

Belachan is one hell of an ingredient , use with confidence , I would stay away from the block type Fromm cc moore and go with the potted paste version you can get at the Asian supermarkets.

Years ago I fished a lake where maggots were really effective through winter. I put the belachan through a garlic press and created some belachan sausages that looked like maggots/small worms. It worked very well and out fished most who were using simple maggots. The only problem is the smell of belachan - I know that's what makes it attractive but it makes the whole bivvy smell not to mention your hands, clothes etc!

Go block, the salts matter! the potted one is alright in boilies but again, not a patch on the block.
I wish it was as I can get it cheaper and an 40kg cartons where as the blocks are 250g and I spend a good proportion of my life unwrapping them lol

The block I get are completely shrimp, those salts come from the shrimp.
The 90% shrimp paste contains all the water of the shrimp, which counts as shrimp content. its not even 90% usually about 65 max. however the longer that dries out the more the salt content rises and the shrimp content "lowers" but the starting ingredients are the same, its like selling a young cheddar and an extra mature cheddar. believe me, Ive been out there to the factories when visiting family and whether its Indonesia or Malaysia or thailand the general process is the same. with the block form having a small amount of corn starch added to negate the desiccative properties of the salt ( not the main ingredient as some companies would have you believe ) - usually these companies have an alternative that they're financially vested in selling
There is something about that transitional process that makes the block a hell of an additive. as I say the salts matter

Mozzi what brand do you use if you don't mind me asking .
I'm not using it as a boilie additive or in large amounts .. yet .
As I said in my original post it's going to be solid bag approach early on . I want something subtle and full of flavour etc .. but more importantly something that I've seen no one else use . From there I'll draw my conclusions and go on .
So I think a small block I can grate or powder down and then I'll be injecting the bag with a Belachan liquid to get a soluble scent moving around in the water .
I can't wait to get started ... once the rivers close

Bleach liquid?!
Ive just got a spec sheet, it comes from Malaysia where my relatives make goods for export, so a half pallet chucked into a container and a Christmas card of good graces lol.
A hell of a lot of it is made in one place and then packaged for different companies. I know its made in the same place that makes what I THINK ( going by their blurb on their product ) makes the BAF paste, this is just dried out more to intensify it.
I keep asking my cousin out there to see if bigger blocks can be brought so its less labour this end, but his association with the company owner I believe is through a gym, however when covid started he built his own small work out area and became a hermit

It's difficult to get the liquid PVA friendly, I'd recommend grating it into a bucket of small pellets at around 10% personally, atleast a week before you go so the pellets can be enbued with the stench, keep a lid on lol
It's also great as a paste, but due to how much a block is compressed I recommend grating it into a bowl and then re-kneading.
Adding some wheat gluten and a small amount krill powder ( about two teaspoons of each to half a block ) and kneaded with a bit of water makes a brilliant hookbait wrap, studded with those aforementioned pellets it's brilliant.
I recommend latex gloves.

Mix with warm water and pour over the pellets, give them a good shake, like a sponge, they will draw the lot in

Mozzi is it worth adding some Himalayan salt to my bag mix ??
Or would you just go with the salts in the Belachan block ?
I've got some coarse rock salt that I'll grind a little to fine it down if so .

You could add both if you wanted, it's only going to be a pva bag mix so it's not like it's access use, you don't need tons for it to be effective,
The salts from Belechan are inherently intertwined with more food signals, thus in there own way superior, but I think salt content wise there's no harm to be had using both.
