With not using a lot of bait this time of year been tying up some mesh bags. Does anyone have any tips on how to get them tight and compact? Most of the time they are really loose at the top.

Youtube how to do the overhand knot on them mate. Sounds like you are not following it down enough

My advice would be to twist the bag tightly closed give yourself plenty of slack tubing when you tie the first knot. After that just practise loads

Grasshopper, first you must overcome dexterity, whilst you practice this art do not worry if it looks like a sloppy sock for the PVA will melt, with plenty of practice and study you will ascend to master of the PVA mesh where you will be looked upon in great awe.

Just twist the mesh and tie them off with string or tape, can get them super tight this way

Once filled cut the mesh off without tying it it, take the loose tag end and cut lengthways down to just above the too of the contents ,leaving you with the mesh bag filled with 2 tag ends at the top, tie those ends down onto the contents, making the bag secure and tight . It's the easiest way to do it compared with the other methods mentioned

I just work the knot down and always get it tight . Leaving a tag and cutting the length to tie off is ok but you waste a fair bit.

Or...

Cut the tag, fold the tag over the bag and seal it with saliva. V little waste and can get it tight folding the tag back over. You can reseal the open end of the mesh on tube this way to with a fold.

Surely that melts the mesh? I find it so delicate I wouldn't dream of using spit to seal it like I would a solid bag

No because your doubling back and sealing.

Saves making a knot too so saves a bit of PVA.

Sometimes the most obvious advice is that little bit of simple genius you need

That is what I do for longer casts.
I found with a big chuck 'lick and stick' can come off on the cast, unless you tie it up with pva string.
Just as easy to cut it down and tie the bag itself.
