Hi im new to bait rolling and im just wondering what peoples experiences are with either of these base mixes.

Do you have a prefernce for one or the other and if so which one.

Im not doing this as a purely cost excercise so that isnt my main focus.

I genuinly wouldnt know how to put my own mix togeter and both of these get rave reviews.

I do like the convenience that i can order trop amino off BAF.

With either mix how much liquid do you think i could add per 6 egg mix and if i wanted to add extra dry ingredients like GLM or Liver poweder again how much do you think i couls get away with.

I inderstand both are fantastic stand alone i just want to have a tinker but would like to have a broad idea how to start. Thanks in advance guys.

A lot of thought from some good bait brains went in to both mixes. The Trop is available ready mixed so may be a better idea if you're just starting

Thank you for the feed back ive been reading the forums a long time and have follwed your responses in the past to others.

If i went ahead with Tropamino for example (i know that the ingredients are out there for this mix this is why i ask)

Would i be able to say add 100ml liquids per kilo for example liquid liver, fish hydro shrimp extract?

Would i also be able to add thongs like GLM to the dry mix at about 30g per kilo aswell?

I just curious is there a rule of thumb like dont go over X amount per kilo as a start point. I can already tell bait making is going to be a fun but long road of experience.

I ask as i already have these things in the garage but im worried ill be taking away/ changing to much of what already works.

Thanks for you time 👍🏻

A 100ml is a lot of liquid for a kilo of basemix. I think you might get a sticky mess there.

All basemixes are different. Start by making 250g batches. Then when you find a ratio that mixes well, rolls well and boils ok, then scale up.

From memory both these mixes are light on the soluble ingredients deliberately so you can add in your own addictions.

I used BM1 in its current mix for the first year of rolling my own bait, i added a good spice package to this and also a few other soluble ingredients. i keep my liquids lower as well as it can be sticky to roll.

GLM at 30g will be fine.
i would strongly advise following the advice given about 250g mixes and even 1 egg mixes, i roll per egg not to a specific weight if that makes sense?
im still new to bait making but once you get the ratios correct the rest is easy, youll get into a routine for rolling. i use all hand tools (no mixer, air/eclectic gun) and i can do 2.5kg in an hour.

ive also seen you're local to me in dudley, if you want to PM me for any info carry on.

Both mixes will take 'extras' very well.

BM1 listed on here was always about adding a few more little bits and bobs to make it your own, I've made tons of the stuff with a few little extras and many caught well on them for a long time. IF you try adding much more than 40-50ml/kg of liquid it will be very sticky to roll.

Trop is a more 'complete' package to start off with. You can add extras but I wouldn't go mad. Its already got krill, brocacel, chilli and paprika in it to offer attraction. The recipe is readily available (I won't list it here, its not mine to publish) so you could make it yourself and maybe try replacing one or two of the above rather than just adding more stuff to it. It will also take more liquid, some do roll it with around 100ml/kg.

Whatever you do, as other have said, start with small text mixes and work up when its coming out how you want it and remember often in bait 'less is more'

quick question smurf, what do you think of the current trend of coating baits in liquids and powdered additives?

I think it's pointless. The only thing I want boosted is the hookbaits.

Some might wonder if it's a way to sell more stuff.

Honestly I am undecided. Its not new and I have played around with it for >20 years. Some ingredients are so heat unstable you just can't get them in a boilie in any other way.

Some times it seems to help and others makes no noticeable difference. So many variables in it with water/fish/angling pressure/temperature etc.

I have never seen any evidence it hinders your chances so do I still do it...yes. I don't use a huge amount, current baits get 20grams of liquid per Kg of finished baits before freezing. My current liquid of choice is:
50g Hydro Tuna Powder
50g Betaine HCL
75g Flavour enhancer (mix of MSG, Disodium Inosinate and Disodium Guanylate
110ml warm water to dissolve all the above in then mix with:
60g Celmanax
330g Hydro Wheat
330g Hydro Calanus

Neat this liquid really gets them grubbing about when they come across it I figure a light coating on my baits can only get food signals in the swim quicker when first introduced whilst the baits then start to break down and give off there own attraction. I have some hookbaits that have been heavily coated in this for months...not yet had a chance to fish with them.

Other things I have played around with in mixes similar to this are Ascorbic acid (vit C), Caprylic acid, Capric acid etc

what sort of shelf life does this mix have?
i toyed with a mix of liquids and powders but i didnt feel that it made a big difference.

biggest difference i saw was varying my boiling times. 30sec,1min some not even boiled, made a massive difference in feeding response.

Once made up and cooled I keep it in my bait fridge and use it within 6 months.

My baits are always a mixture of sizes and different boiling times

As you are new to bait making keep it nice and simple.

50 grams shrimp paste.
6 large eggs
650 grams trop base mix

Mix and test in fridge for an hour.

Roll.

Do not get carried away with all the liquids and other stuff that can be added/ advertised.

It's often counter productive to have to much going on in a bait and it can get quite expensive.

Let the base mix do the work.

Thanks to everybody for the feed back and the advice.

I actually tryed rolling a bit today. Im not going to lie i have no clue what the base mix is as it came with a load of second hand mixing stuff i brought but i had fun rolling it and just trying my hand at it. Its deffinitly something i want to continue doing but with knowing the ingredients im using.

Ill definitely air on the side of caution with liquids and start small as suggested. Any and all other suggestions are welcome.

I know this will spark another bit of a debate but do you think adding flavours and oils make a difference?

Essential oils and fish oil definitely. Flavours yes to a lesser extent. Good quality flavours I'm sure help but weak diluted ones I think I'd rather not bother with.

good flavours do, IE john baker, essential oils, hydro liquids, fish oils all make a difference.

Ive got a couple john baker flavours like the plum and ala salar along with a few others (rod hutchinson and some BAF)

I start to get confused when it comes to essential oils like black pepper and things like n butric acid and other acids.

Hi Smurf

could you make this up in advance and store it in the garage for any length of time.? or would it have to be used fairly quick.
Thanks

John Baker flavours plum and ala salar, a proven combination right there. per 500 gram mix

2-3ml Ala Salar Flavour
1ml Plum

I use that combo with tropamino and it works a dream. I blank when I complicate it further.

I use that combination at those levels but personally to a 1kg mix. The Ala Salar dripped on your slippers generally gets the conversation started with the misses of an evening!!! After rolling for a day i actually sniff the dog's arse now and again just to give my nostrils a break!!!!
