Looking to get a vacuum sealer so i can back my bait up into 1kg amounts rather than the 5kg bags it comes in. Anyone have experience of this before i buy a sealer? Im assuming the vacuum isnt that strong that it will misshape the baits etc?

Decent heat sealers will have a overide button where you can bypass the main suction, basically setting it at what you want. I have no doubt that my heat sealer on full suction would distort any med soft boilie if they were on top of each other when vac applied.
Personally I found heat sealers great but the bags or roll of made using them expensive (for bait) though it might have changed now.. I used to bag hops for a forum I ran, must have done thousands of them, very good for that purpose.
Gerry's your man for this iirc.

My one has 3 settings, have to use the lowest or it does squash baits a bit .

I got the one Gerry recommended from Lidl. Vac packs my food and bait perfectly. I use it for exactly the same reason as you and vac pack my boilies into 1 kilo bags from a 5 kilo bag plus some smaller session sized hook bait packs. I'm on the Atlantic Heat freezer boilies which are a soft bait and had no problems at all, especially as they are frozen pre vac packing

Cool. Is that just letting it do its thing? Or do you cancel the operation half way through to reduce the amount vacuumed out?
Found one on amazon that says you can cancel the operation to suit your needs

Just did an edit to include the fact I'm packing frozen boilies from the 5 kilo bag to the new 1 kilo bags.
I just use it on the normal setting. You can override it anytime you want but I've never felt the need to.

These are 18mm packs with a smaller hook bait pack. I normally use 15mm but have used them all up and need to vac pack another 5 kilos from the bigger bag.
I get everything organised first, Packer set up, kitchen scales and bowl for weighing plus bags ready, or if using a long roll of film either cut it to size and seal one end of each bag or the end of the roll before getting the 5 kilo bag out of the freezer. This saves time faffing about and lets you vacuum the bags whilst the baits are rock solid frozen.
Atlantic Heat comes in 5 kilo frozen vac pacs prom the maker but even so the amount of freezer space you can save with vacuum packing is literally amazing.
Vac Packers can cost from 20 something quid to 2 to 3 hundred quid. Gerry's recommended Lidl does everything I need it to and has a 3 year guarantee and the bags or rolls are cheap and available.

I have had a couple and currently use the Andrew James Vacuum Sealer ( Amazon) as I want the strongest vacuum I can get !!
I am not bothered about miss shaped baits frozen ones dont miss shape anyway
its only the soft fresh baits that will alter shape and I quite like that makes em a bit different if they end up a bit square I only use rolls not bags and buy them when on offer the Lidl one is a good buy if they come around again its been a god send with food on the bank too no more rotten bacon etc cook currys vacuumed sealed just drop in boiling water to heat and eat no mess no limits
if you get some chicken and put in your freezer they say 3 months but vacuum seal it and freeze it then goes to over 12 months blooming marvellous things vacuum sealers

Vac sealers are great, but if you are planning on using the bait within a few weeks, id just use zip seal.
As said earlier - the biggest benefit I get from mine is pre packing food and dropping the pack in boiling water on the bank

I also vac pac some maize as well. I don't know exactly why but it must be something to do with its composition and water retention but it makes excellent cool blocks. I use the stuff in my bucket first and then use the vac packed stuff if required towards the end of the weeks session.
Cheers guys, ive ordered one from Amazon along with some extra bags

No, no problems at all really.
Had a bit of trouble when doing some tigers as the "slime" was too watery and the vacumn sucked the juice out which made a bit of a mess. Just drained it a bit more and it was all good.
The Tigers were from a tin, not prepared by myself.

When I vacuum seal mine and freeze it, on getting it out of the freezer a few days later the bag seems sealed but it's not tight as when it went in , is this just me or a general thing, I've even tried double sealing the ends

I used to double seal both ends as standard, even then some wouldn't seal properly. Never got to the bottom of it, I assumed there was something on the sealing strip that meant the temp wasn't reached so the seal wasn't made, even after giving them a good tug once cooled to make sure.
I was a aseptic pharmacy tech for 12 years. We used 'isolators' to manufacture, think totally sealed systems from the environment. Products, Cytotoxics for chemo, tpn for nutrition' were removed from the system using giant heat sealers and bags (don't ask for method). The only time a bag wouldn't seal was if there was some crap on the material that covered the heating element rail. To say I've used heat sealers/vacuum sealers more than most would be a understatement....lucky me 😃

I've just bought a onsenkitchen Vacuum Sealer from Amazon. Used it for the first time today and very impressed. I used the Ridgemonkey Crusher and crushed 10k of boilie. Vacuum sealed 4 bags for the whole lot, I cannot believe the size of the bags when vacuumed and sealed.
Really easy to use. I personally like the bag on the roll so you can make whatever size bag you require.
On offer at the moment too!

Used the one i got last night. So far so good. However, sometime it stopped the vacuum halfway though so needed to redo the bag. May just be i hadnt pit the bag in flat. All a bit of learning on the job. Not as wuick a process as id hoped, but im doing 40kg into 1kg bags. Im sure smashing 10 kg out at a time wouldnt have seemed as long

I'm doing 2.5k bags for an upcoming French trip. The longest part is weighing up the bait to put in the bags.
It's Ali's much quicker if you fill the bags in one go. Then vacuum and seal.

I dont use bags just the rolls
I seal one end then cut to the length needed for 1kg cut repeat till the roll is empty and I have a pile ready for filling and sealing
then I get the bags filled and stacked from the bulk bag of shelf lifes then just seal the lot my shelf lifes I had rolled from a local company to my own recipe had a life of about 10 months but by vacuum packing them in a powerful machine I have got some 2 years old and total perfect not needed to freeze them of course things cant go bad in a proper vacuum for a very very long time
likewise with food I love swordfish steaks so used to go to Billingsgate Fish Market and buy a £40 slab this would make about 25 to 30 1 inch thick steaks depending on the price per kg that I vacuum packed and froze and had a freezer life of over 12months instead of the normal 3 months
I also used to cook some sausages and bacon and mushrooms in my air fryer vacuum pack them then chuck them in a ridge monkey type stove top cooker to heat up with a tin of shirt lifters tip the lot in a chunk of crusty baguette couple of cups of tea was set for a good few hours easy peasy

Won't make much difference which you buy, although getting one with a low vac setting is good for doing freshly rolled boilie (to prevent squashing) . The cut to length rolls are far more cost effective than the bags too

I ended up getting the Bonsenkitchen Vacuum Sealer after a couple of recommendations on here,
And used it for the first time today
Had Some bait delivered this morning, And sealed up 15 kilos
And so far really happy with the results, and it definitely saves space in the freezer, the bags you get with it are just the right size,
Unfortunately I ordered some spare vacuum bags, but forgot to check the size, so narrower that the ones supplied, but still ok to use,
So far very very happy
Time will tell, but hopefully all should be fine

I only do a kilo at a time as that is what I would generally use at one time, probably half that.
As they come in rolls you can make the bags as big as you want. I generally use the length (or width which ever way you want to look at it) of the machine and that gives me plenty of space for a kilo. You could no doubt get more in there though.
For me its all about getting the bag/roll into the sealer correctly for it to seal. Filling it up too much can make that a bit of a pain.

So feasibly this could be done to keep freshly rolled bait, rather than freezing it? Week or two in a fridge..?

totally depends on what temperature it will be in for the week buddy
If in cooler Box / bag then yes - have used this method lots of times.
If at room temp or more id doubt it would last a week (although i havent tried it).

Afternoon gents.
I had a problem with my vacuum sealer this weekend. Basically it wouldn't vacuum.
I noticed that the rectangular foam seal had come away a bit (see pic below)
I re-set it and tried again and it was better but no full vacuum.
Any ideas fellas?

It could be your gasket needs cleaning or replacing.Take the foam piece out and give it a clean but let it dry out completely before putting back in.If this does not work then try buying a new gasket
