Having only ever used one briefly in France just wondering why there's so much negativity towards them? Are they not safe to use?
I have a messed up back and the idea of having a raised platform to hold them over is appealing especially when doing self takes.
For those who do use them, recommendations? I like the look of the avid ones.

If you mean the framed version I found the saber tackle framed cradle great and good quality

It's the metal frames that cause concern.
It's the metal frames that cause concern.
Metal bars on the sides.
The bottom is generally rock hard with no give.
Raised high off the floor its a big drop if it all goes wrong.
People hold the fish up higher when using a cradle.
The sides get in the way when the fish suddenly goes mental in your hands as you try put it down.

I find them brilliant, but some I can see why they would be open to criticism. Some are too narrow and deep, and have no padding on the bars, and retain water too much. Have to say the avid aren't any of those though, brilliant bit of kit. I had the xl safeguard for a number of years, now have the cot. Both highly recommended. I don't agree people hold fish higher using them, I know I certainly don't and I can't say I've noticed it with others either. I used a cheapy Nash one at a day ticket and it was awful, all of the things I listed earlier . So be careful what you buy, but don't let negativity towards them put you off, they are great when used sensibly

I have the first Nash ones
Horrible heavy thing only used once never even had a fish in it stuck in the shed..

I also had the first version of the Nash never had a problem with it
Now i have the Sonik sk tek Cradle top cradle , metal bars are fully padded and the bottom is also thick and soft.
People who hold a carp higher with a cradle have no idea how to use a cradle, the intention is that you treat the fish in the cradle,if you take a photo and you can no longer hold the carp it is a easy move to ensure that the carp always falls on your forearms, i never hold my carp higher than I would with a normal unhooking mat infact I hold it less high in my cradle than most do with a standard mat

I know a local fishery to me supplies the cradles and the big common in there had its anal fin snapped being dropped on a framed cradle.I don't see an issue with them if used correctly,alot is down to poor fish care by the angler than the mat/cradle

Oh yeah...
I was concentrating on the tail part rather than the mat when I watched it

I also have the avid cradle the newer stormshield model and it's great. There's plenty of padding on the sides and it is not a deep sack in the slightest.
Having bought it now though wish I'd of gone for the captive cot just for the compact element.

Thanks all, it's the Stormshield I was looking at, just got to decide a size.
Lake I fish has fish just to around 30, but would also like to be able to take it to France so may have to get the xl.
Did like the look of the cot also, cradle was purely to save my back for pics!

I agree have the avid smaller version and its excellent, definitely the best of all the ones i looked at. I use mine for barbel on trent and its miles better than a flat mat.

+1 for the Sonik SK-Tek Cradle, previously had a Leeda Rogue Cradle, although it was 1/2 the price the difference between the 2 in terms of padding is night and day!
