After many years of trying my son wants to start carp fishing. He wants his own kit, so advice on a budget 2 rod set up, Just the rods and reels, thanks. By the way he's 18 and 6ft tall.

Potentially a personal question but, knowing the rough budget would be good? Appreciate one person's view on that could be massively different to the next but without a number to work to, you could get lots of suggestions beyond your comfort zone.

There's always a great opportunity to pick up decent gear 2nd hand, so whatever suggestions are forthcoming in terms of specific tackle, definitely worth a scout around the various selling sites & pages.

I have spare alarms etc so around £350-£400 for rods n reels. We will be fishing Todber and Linear mostly.

Heard loads of good things about Vader x rods, they are cheap

Okuma Inc reels for £50-60 a pop. The Sonik or Shimano tx rods will go nicely and should all be comfortably well within the budget

Shimano TX2's may be worth a look. I recently picked up a set of the 13ft versions for occasional distance work and for the money, have been really impressed. Some of the 12ft models can be picked up for around £85 each.

Reel wise, I'm probably not best placed to give any real opinion on these as I've never owned or used them, but the Okuma Inception sounds like it could be a good one to look at. Hopefully this link to a previous thread works, if not, just do a quick search for Okuma Inception 👍

Vader x rods and okuma Inc reels would be a great starting point or the shimano tx2 that have been mentioned

Have had a look at the Shimano TX2 13fts and am impressed, as for reels son would like to look at some, so off to the tackle shop soon. I will let you know.

The tackle box produces great rods as low prices and would be worthy of consideration

There's so much good second hand gear around I'd look there first if you're experienced you know what sort of gear he needs for the venues you have planned.

Have a look at the avid rods m8 good for the money

There is zero reason to pay more for a budget rod than what you pay for the Sonik Vader X (a top rod for its price) put a Daiwa 25A black widow on it and you're good to go for a while.

We have been shopping and he now owns a set of Shimano TX 2 Intensitys and a set of second hand Shimano c14 14000s a bargain. He has better kit than me, thanks for the help, cheers.

Budget kit is budget kit, whilst I was able to purchase a set of maddocks challenges and my young friend able to place a bait 150 yards with then battered them for a year then I did for quite a few years in wards he purchased a set of what was an incredible blank for the money (12' 2.5) for £60 a piece he blow them up with in a year, cheap blanks that where good but limited. Invest or use sparingly imho.

I purchased a set of harrison balisters for £80 for 2 second hand of course some 20 years ago I've used these as a marker and wood rod for 2 decades used them to fish with and they are superb placing a PVA bag 120 yard using 20 lb line. For £80 quid they really is an alternative to equipment that doesn't last compared to kit that purely does the job decade after decade
