Hi, ive got some stainless banksticks that i want to spray black, is it a case of spray primer then spray black ?

Choose colour but my choice is always a Montana colour - can choose from their pallet black can range is a safe bet but for a really nice finish buy from their gold range

Stainless is a **** to paint!
It might stick OK if you abrade it well, but its hit and miss.
Waste of time and money imo

Have to agree, it will never give a durable finish home spraying stainless. Cheaper in your own time to buy some black ones.

It wont last 5 mins if you try to push them into the ground.

Degrease, abrade, etch primer all in a short time before it gets a coat of chromium oxide again. Not sure how durable it will end up but that's the advice for best adhesion that was given from a specialist.

I've done it and they've been fine obviously chip scratch where they go in the ground. Good rub down to key the surface, auto spray primer then I bought some black spray from toolstation job done.

Why don't you try some carbon wrap adhesive film?
Probably cheaper and will last longer than spray paint.

It will adhere if its prepped properly and give you some durability.

Best bet is to keep the stainless as is, if you're intent on painting them, I'd rough them up with some emory paper, etch primer/stabilise solution them and have them epoxy powder coated for longevity.

Best bet is to get them cerakoted. I raced mx bikes for 15 years, it's a common thing in the motorsport industry, very very hard wearing, better than anodising and much better than spraying. Can withstand high temperature as well as being very hard wearing.

Is it not easier to just buy some black sticks?
It was just a little project to while away the close season, ive got a few stainless sticks that i fancy spraying up rather than buying black, thanks for the replys and advice
You may think it's just a minor touch-up that doesn't need any primer, but it does. Without it, the paint won't last. Try to apply some gray primer. The painter and decorator I work with told me it's the best in business when it comes to dark colors. If you don't want to invest in a primer, you could try to double coat them, but it'll happen the same thing. Usually, paint doesn't last without a primer. The surface needs to be prepared first. The extra-thick and sticky layer before the black color will definitely increase its endurance. Let me know if I have helped you. Perhaps you can show us some pictures of your little project!
Why would you spray stainless.. for a proper finish you would want powder coat. Even with primer it will all flake in no time.
...Black shrink wrap from ebay ?...I did it on some old stainless turned out pretty well 🙂
I applied Hammerite to my stainless and it eventually chipped away.
As for shrink tube, it works as I have it on four sticks, but, when you try and push sticks into hard ground, the shrink tube can slip down the stainless steel and what is near the point of the stick gets cut up with stones. Plus, if you have matching stainless bars, you cannot add the shrink tube unless you are able to remove the fittings etc.
