I have recently picked up a new vader x rs 3.25 lb rod and i am looking to match it up with a reel. I am on a budget of around £70 for a reel. Can anyone recommend me a good reel around this price bracket? The lake i will be fishing can have casts past 120 yrds in some places, will I be able to reach them with a budget setup like this? I know technique will play a part, but what I would like to know is that is this setup capable of such big casts, with a standard big pit reel?

Well i casted +120 yard with my old Shimano Titanos and 12ft Phantom rods, the Titanos is not bigger then the Emcast/BW 25 A

Technique is a massive part of it. Poor technique and it won't matter how good your kit is, you won't get there, and vice versa. Something like a Penn affinity 7000 would be perfect but a little above your price range (but definitely worth that little extra cash).

I had a set Vader X last summer in 12ft 3.00lb cork (TFT custom build) was surprised how good they were, the Rs is an improved version.
Reel i used on them: Emcast 25A +100 yard was no problem, just dare to throw them hard, they are strong.

Yes, I think they put on new guides, which are braid friendly (always good when trying to get some distance) so hopefully will be able to put my rig out a decent way

Nice, was looking for a reel to pair with it, was maybe wondering of putting on a reel that isn't massive but not too small, maybe something like a wychwood riot 75s which ive heard good reviews about, only thing that stops me from buying them is the line clip, not sure if i like it

Try and look for one second hand. Failing that then the Mitchell avocast are apparently very good, I've the spod version which does the job. The daiwa 25s mentioned will do, but are a bit small really for distance work andif your technique isnt spot on will cost you a few yards. Bigger 35 versions would be ok, as would something like a Shimano aerlex

I use 20 year old biomasters, they wont beat basiairs for distance, but they get me far enough, probably 130 -150 yards. Can pick them up relatively cheap second hand, and will last forever

Just bought a shimano speedmaster xtc 14000 think they £110 new so a little more than you said I've had it of a mate in the wisdom to use it on marker rod but for the money you can't fault it smooth as silk slow oscillation and big spool these will chuck a lead a good way makes my 6000ts feel like old tanks lol but I' no which will last longer and which I can get repaired

Was just thinking of maybe setting my budget up to maybe £100 just to have the option of a few more different reels. I have also looked on angling direct and found that they have the Crosscast 45 SCW's for just £100, which seem like a really good deal for a big reel. Anyone used them or have any more recommendations within the price point?

Affinity 7000 ,7000ltd, 7000mk 2, don't be tempted by the 8000 size as they are huge ,too big for anything other than very long range boat work imo

They don't make them anymore, haven't for a while. There is a III version which is £160 or a more expensive Carbon version.

Sorry mate, forgot to have a look. Not really sure though if I want penns or daiwas to be honest. There do seem to be a lot of people recommending penns but I don't want to rule out other good reels because I'm sure there are plenty good reels out there for well under £100. I would just like to get a bigger picture off the capability of other reels first, their price and performance.

I think you are overthinking the whole thing. The reel is going to make a tiny difference to the distance you want to cast. Technique no.1, rod no.2, arguably line and reel are no.3. You'd be better off going for a lesson with Terry, Mark or look in the sea mags for a local casting tutor than getting tied in knots over what reel and line you need to buy.

I have cast a Vader x 3.5tc which I think is the older version to your ones. They should be ok with .38 level 2.5 or 3oz and a small bag. Don't get hung up on distance though. There is a lot more to this game than being able to cast a long way..

Say for a 3lb TC rod, you should be able to cast a 3.5 oz lead. But anyways, will get out and do some testing with what the rod can handle. But yes, absolutely, there is more to than just casting massive distances. Plus you need to be able to fish effectively at those ranges. No point if you can cast 150yrds but not bait up at that range either!

Yep 2.5 or 3oz in a bag. Will weigh getting on for 4oz. Also not sure if it's this thread but have a look for some 2nd hand Penn 7000's they can be found for £80+- often with spare spools.

Isn't spool size more to do with tackle balance? Heavier thicker more wiry lines. Bigger spools and butt rings. More supple and thinner lines don't need to bigger spools which in turn don't need the bigger rings?

And when he did, with 10lb and a braided shockleader, he did get some distance I cannot deny that. However, afterwards, he switched to a larger reel with the same 10lb line and shockleader, but then got a further distance.

The spools aren't really higher diameter between 35 & 45 models, they're longer.
Friction from the line releasing on the spool lip will limit distance a bit when the level of remaining line goes down, but with all due respect it doesn't sound like that will be an issue just yet.
You will be limited by technique, rod, line/load and then reel (in that order)
