I sure this has been a topic before but couldn't find any thread. I'm looking at buying a new set of rods and struggle to choose between 10ft or 12ft and further more what t/c on each length for an all rounder. Max I'm fishing is 100 maybe odd occasion 120 but that isn't my main goal. Any advice would be great. I'm leaning towards 10ft, unsure on t/c thou. Thinking the Shimano 5500 to accompany the rods.

120 yards in a fishing situation especially if you are using mono and if its windy you will struggle with a 10ft rod, that is a pretty hefty distance. What lb line do you use and is it mono or braid?

120 is the max, more looking at 100 or less for 95% of my fishing. Was mentioning 120 as a possibility in the future. Line I use regularly is a 0.40mm mono which I believe is around the 15lb mark.

For that range with 0.40 mono 3.5tc or above 12ft rods all day long. Unless there is a specific reason you need 10ft and may have to struggle? Like I said before 120yrds with 040 mono especially if there is any kind of head wind is a fair chuck

Maybe you can buy a set of both?
I prefer 10 ft rod for sub 95y and make use of a boat or baitboat for the longer ranges...

So, 10ft is perfect. But casting 95 or more, i prefer 12 ft rods.

Thanks both. Great advice, maybe a 12ft would be better for an all rounder. The 10ft just seemed more compact and easier to transport. Would the 5500 still be suitable for 12ft or those more for the shorter rod?

Just want a nice all rounder set up that can handle most situation with a nice playing feel, but not the huge pits as yet as I know would need a much stronger set up.

5500 fit 12ft rods.

I can't argue with the fact that 10ft rods are more compact. It's also the reason why I love them so much. A compact rod that fulfills all my needs

How far can you put a 10ft and what TC do you use? Any advice on a nice action rod?

I have Avid traction Pro 10ft 3.5lb 15lb esp syncro and i can put a rig 100yards with a 3oz lead i am no caster by any means.

At that TC how is it playing a fish? Read a lot of 10ft 3.5lb are very stiff and not the best fish playing tools

Googled those rods and they look good for the price.

They play fish really tbh, not to stiff, i opted for the 3.5lb for snag fishing and weedy water plus if i want to fish at abit of distance i can.

I can hit 80yards in perfect conditions with a 0.4mm line and 3.5 oz lead, using my 10ft, 3lbs rods.
I assume my technique isn't perfect and with some adjustments (lead size, line diameter), it could go further.

I don't like casting distance as I boat out my rigs. But I can tell you 9ft scopes will chuck that distance with PVA nuggets the lot they truly cast like rokets. I recently recieved my third scope from the UK. Absolutely love smaller rods.

If you going to cast PVA bags or use a heavy lead to hold bottom I'd go for 3.25 tc or 3.5 tc rod so you don't overload your blank regularly. If you do a hard chuck with lower TC rod you will hear that crack sound meaning you straigning your blank/spiget on the rod.its why i opt for higher test curvs as they bring versatility and muscle to the carp. I use medium XTA LCs on my rods similar to ypur 5500. They balance out beautifully.

Just a question, why are people using 10ft rods and talking of distances of 80 and 100yds? What's the point?
I tried 10ft rods a couple of years back, for tight swims fishing up to 30yds. Didn't like them (each to their own) so sold them on. I totally understand the tight swim thing but not sure why people find them beneficial when fishing anything over 50yds? Line pick up must be rubbish? What am I missing here? Surely this is not down to pack up size? It's not that much of a difference unless completely telescopic and you can get longer rods that do that?

Some people buy short rods because the waters they fish swims are very tight a lot of people buy them because it's the fashion it will change a lot of people are going back to 12ft a lot of people have heard a cracking noise on scopes because they have broke

I said i can cast up to 80yards but i don't. On my local waters it only takes 50yards max.
In France i use the 10ft for my boat fishing as well.

Since i bought my 10 ft rods 6y ago, all 12ft's are collecting dust in the shed..

In addition 10ft's pack down 30cm less what is more convenient in my car.

12 ft for me , as others have said it covers all distances if required for certain situations

An all rounder will always be a compromise between casting distance, fish playing and manoeuvrability in restricted swims.
I have always fished with 12 fts but wanted a 10 ft rod to enable me to access restricted swims.
My solution was to buy some 10 ft tfg compact commercials 2.5 lb tc through action rods for sub £30 each.
I then sold most of my 12 fts that I couldn't see a use for, but kept a few “just in case”
( I definitely recommend those tfg rods mentioned BTW, much better than the price suggests)
If you can, it's definitely worth considering buying both lengths as Ynnek suggested, that way you can have a soft short rod that's ideal for playing especially in tight corners but also buy a 12 ft that will cast a decent distance if needed.
Plenty of reasonable rods out there for not a lot of money.

I have some 9fters and I can just to say hit 100m with them. Comfortably I can fish 70 80 meters with them.

What reel line and lead did you use, thats a fair chuck on the tfg compact carp 2.5lb.

I fish 15lb reel line, 2.5oz lead and a medium solid bag and can chuck up to 65-70yds.
