Hi All

After replacing my braid on my reels for my Spod and marker any recommendations? Preferably a braid that doesn't require splashing with water all the time

All braid needs wetting really.
Daiwa j braid is decent and not too pricey

Daiwa J Braid x8, same as the Korda one, doesn't need wetting

I use 50lb Berkeley whiplash straight through, very good stuff

I use the 0.16 20lb which is exactly the same as the Korda one, stick a 50lb whiplash (or whatever) leader on and your good to go

I must be the only one who struggled with whiplash - windknots mostly . I put it down to me . I wet it regularly but still had problems . I got on so much better with TFG banana braid which is slightly thicker and I found more manageable. The added bonus it being yellow which I found quite handy .

Currently using PowerPro on my setup. Used it for years on my pike lure and bait rods so have a lot of confidence in it. No problem so far while spodding.

The best braid ive ever used is the sufix 832 eight strand braid.

What would be the reason for this, why not just use 50lb Whiplash straight through? Is it that 50lb is thicker and reduces casting distance if run straight through?

Just curious. I'm about to buy a spod reel and also braid for it, i'm trying to figure out the best setup i need for spombing. It seems, from what i am reading, i need to buy braid, plus a shock leader, and attach several meters of the shock leader to the end of the braid to help avoid crack offs.

I'm ok to go with the Daiwa or Whiplash recommended here. Just need to decide the diameter for the mainline, and which shock leader - if i even need one at all?

Advice appreciated.

20lb braid mainline with a 50lb braid shockleader will be fine. It will give you the best distance if that's what you require.

Actually, after some searching now, I think I will go for the Sonik Vaderx 8000 RS Spod Reel, which comes pre-loaded with 200m of 30lb braid. I'm going to pair this with the Sonik Vaderx 12ft 4.5lb spod and marker rod.

Question, if I have 30lb braid straight through, will I still need a shock leader for spombing?

If your using a full size spomb then yes.

Powerpro in 50lb straight through for most spod work, but will drop to 20 with a shock leader for distance - in yellow of course. Mega reliable and casts really well. Used it for over 20 years now - I do a lot of lure fishing, so have it on reels from just 6lb for UL and jig fishing, right up to 100lb for big jerkbaits and swimbaits. As a mainline, I also use it in 50lb, mainly when pike or catfishing. Still haven't found a better all-round braid... always worries me when I hear of people using say 20lb braid straight through for spod work - I wouldn't want to be on the opposite bank when they're baiting up!

What sort of distance could be reasonably achieved with a 50lb braid straight through? as I'm thinking of getting a deeper and I would hate to cast it and snap off at the leader, Just think having no knot would be safer

Deepers don't cast great due to the shape Theyre just not aerodynamic. I max out at 80-90 yards ish with 30lb spectra and a shockleader

50lb PP is the equivalent of 12lb mono but without the twist and memory of mono.
I prefer 65lb which is nearer to 15lb mono diameter for mainline but 50 is perfect for spodding

That would depend on the load you wanted to cast, how far you needed it to go and how well you can do it.

Well let's say a medium spomb would you be able to cast 100yds with 50lb braid straight through with no leader?

Its all iv used after buying some amazing new ***** for 25 squids for 1 reel.... buy cheap and it lasts not like much from china but the braid is good... if you dont fish at 200 yards and know what you are fishing over then its okay for spoding.
