That might be cheap but I'd definitely not put that in the reliable category

They don't need to be complicated.
A bit of birdfood
A bit of milk protein
A bit of fishmeal
Some cheap additives from the supermarket
Job done. Take a look at the BM1 mix thread. That's a good start. Or look at the Tropamino mix by British Aqua Feeds.

Before you can say you need to define reliable and I bet everyone on here has a different view on that

By reliable , I had in mind a mix that seems to work pretty much
all the time, but as you say....we all have different opinions and views .

Simple mix I've posted here before that IMO covers all of the bases, is simple and most importantly works well:
40% LT94 fishmeal
20% CLO
20% Lamlac
20% semolina
Combined with a decent amount of hydro (krill, fish, squid etc) and some flavourings (if that's what tickles your fancy) and you're away

Hi David.
It's at the top of the bait section. The thread is called the carp forum approved bait.

When you say a decent amount of hydro are you talking about liquids or powders? Do you think plum flavour would work with say squid/octopus or crab?

As much as your budget will allow. I use poor man's hydro which is a belachan block thinned down with 300mol of fish sauce. That recipe below is spot on and fits your criteria perfectly.

I use liquid hydros, have a look on the BAF website as they have a few real good ones. A drop of JB crab or plum works wonders...

I think you're doing those ingredients a disservice, I'd hold them equal if not better than.

Another question on this... I know this mix would work as is, but what are your thoughts on this?
30% LT94 Fishmeal
10% Predigested Fishmeal
15% CLO
5% Robin Red
20% Lamlac
20% Semolina
Have I just overcomplicated it?
Thanks in advance

The bait buffs would probably suggest that you have too much soluble stuff in that one.
Would definitely work though......

30% plus solubles, could poentially end up with a sticky, or soft mix, or both.
If you really want the robin red in there it will up the cost of the finished bait.
I'd just simply reduce the LT94 by 5%.
35% LT94 Fishmeal
20% CLO

To include pdf I'd reduce the lamlac personally. Otherwise you are adding something soluble whilst taking away a % of an insoluble ingredient. I can see some benefit in making it softer and more digestible in cold water but you would have to see if it rolls or not. Another option is just to gun it out and then boil it and then it doesn't matter if it's soft then. Chop the sausages up and it's even more soluble as you have an unsealed end so to speak.

Yes, totally agree. My point was that it's cheap as chips compared to hydro and just as effective, to the point that I don't bother with hydros anymore.

Thanks mate. I do really like Robin Red in a fishmeal bait. My main reason for making my own bait is the satisfaction of catching something (hopefully) on it. Cost is a secondary issue for me, although a great benefit.
I'm planning on two baits for the next year - this one and a sweeter birdseed one for colder weather.

This is now my regular mix for over 18 months now. I use it al year round and it our performs the trop base mix. The difference has been day and night. Cheaper as well.

I used a similar mix back in the early eighties to great success , the semo soya flour mix , wasn't the original richworth 50/50 mix based on this.?
Look at the fish that Winkworth and Dierdritch caught on this basic mix.

And the protein came mainly from pruteen a single cell protein, which is not available anymore.

Way back I used 7oz Red Factor, 7oz Semolina & 2oz Liver Brekkies.
Bit of oil, Parmesan cheese, Marmite or Vecon & a couple of ml flavour, caught everywhere.
Mix in post 7 will catch plenty, no need to over complicate things for these simple fish.

Missed this 1st time round, I agree but 4 years later not so cheap anymore
Personnaly now if I had to buy a monetarily low value base mix (not low quality) it'd probably be AA Baits. Buying ingredients separately wouldn't be worth it anymore (unless using in bulk). A 50/50 sem/soy which you can get from any Asian food store reasonably is still worth a experiment, bit of wholemeal, maybe some desciated coconut, the options are endless in those shops!
