does the amount of time a bait is boiled for effect its buoyancy?
I have been having issues with 1 in 10 boilies floating, I'm wondering if the boiling times have caused this?

The more you boil bait the more water it absorbs and swells. I can't imagine this having an effect on whether baits float though. Are you sure you are mixing your ingredients well enough? Could you be getting batches with more of the lighter ingredients than others?

having the same issues with all batches, weather is out of my basemix bucket or mixing everything individually in smaller amounts and mixing.
its really starting to annoy me as the bait smells and looks brilliant, just 105 of it bloody floats.

Are the boilies floating in water after they have cooled and dried from boiling? Or are they just floating up during the boiling? If they are floating during boiling then this is normal.

no after drying for 2 days, some float some are fine.
I'm picking up a few kg of crushed oyster today to stop this issue.

Not seeing anything obviously wrong with that mix. Yeah try adding the oyster shell.

Could also reduce the drying time to just a few hours to keep more moisture in the bait and also give them a soak in a bucket before using.

I was thinking of dropping the oil down to 10ml per kg of dry.

going to give it 100g-150g of oyster and see how I get on, I like the idea of a texture in the bait with the oyster shell.

thanks for the information though.

what is your cooking set up? Do you cook them in enough water?

15L pan of boiling water, 200g of bait per batch so the water never comes off the boil.

don't have the room for a burko

dont boil them to death in really strong boiling water, sometimes that can get some air in baits...

Nothing wrong with that mix ,,, shouldn´t float Dodgy ingredients

Did you get any of your ingredients, like soya and semo from a bait company, or asian wholesaler ?

A mate of mine had the same problem afew years ago. Only conclusion we came to, was that either the soya or semo
had been cut, with a lighter filler, causing the bait to float. The birdlife had a feast, munching on 2kilos of floating boilies

Bait company bud, quality baits to be specific.
I'm sure 100g of oyster will stop the problem.

The thought that semolina could be cut is quite amusing!
Re: Oyster shell....50 to 70g will be fine, might give you rolling problems at higher levels.

thanks NW
doing a few 10 egg tests today, I caught on the bait but had to soak the baits to make the 10% sink
hopefully the oyster will stop the buoyancy problem.

You are making a decent size 10 egg mix with enough liquids, even with the nectarblend/egg biscuit types of ingredients these can sometimes trap air pockets within the paste, if not well kneaded, and left to rest and absorb those liquids, in a polythene bag with the air twisted out.

Curious TBH - Why are you drying them out for 48 hours, seems excessive IMHO, and you will have lost valuable liquid/weight through the evaporation process.

My advice...
Boil a batch as normal, and only air dry for 1 hour afterwards, then bag up and freeze, leave for a day in the freezer, thaw out and test a few in a pint glass of water or cut down clear plastic 2 litre bottle for sinkability and buoyancy checks so you aren't feeding the birds.

I personally have had this issue many years ago with a 8oz Red factor & 8oz Semo mix, in a bait gun the paste went, trapped air somehow within the gun and bingo! A mix of floaters

Another thing to try in use a rolling table/ roller instead of a bait gun. May bring different results.

Thanks S&D

Will test this theory, I thought maximum drying time was best but It appears I'm wrong.
I'll knock up some 1 egg mixes and test as you have said. I normally leave to absorb liquids in a bag with air in so I'll try it without as you said.

Will report back findings soon.
