What spod braid do people recommend? And would you go higher breaking strain straight through or lighter and use shock leader. Thanks

Daiwa J Braid x8, same as the Korda stuff
, doesn't need wetting all the time, brilliant stuff. I prefer to go lighter (not less than 20lb though) and uses a leader.

I've got 60lb j braid straight through, purely because I use the casting weed rakes a lot.
I might do the second reel with lighter braid and a leader for a bit of extra distance tho

Just grabbed some spectra braid off eBay via China.. £10 and I'm on my 2nd season with it.. fish a very weedy pit and haven't had a single problem

I've used Spectra and found it fine for short to medium range but it was noticeably thicker pound for pound than Powerpro so it will cost you yards fishing at long range.
For short to medium I would happily fish 50lb Spectra straight through
For long range Powerpro or Daiwa J Braid every time.
I think the Korda rebadged J Braid is something like 0.16. I had a large Spomb part at the leader knot hitting the clip at range (could have been a bad/damaged knot I guess) so use Daiwa J Braid in 0.22 (from memory) and all good. Cheaper than Korda badged stuff too. I found the 20lb Korda broke at around 12lb. The 0.22-0.24 J Braid/Powerpro breaks at around 17lb.

50lb straight through,I've still got the spool it was bought as spectra braid but the spool actually says power pro made in the USA by innovative textiles, strange because I bought it from China and has Chinese writing on the box it's yellow in colour

There's a lot of fake Powerpro coming out of China. I had a spool myself and it's nothing like the real thing but absolutely fine as long as you can hit the distance.

I got 39lb spectra and fish it straight through, it's very fine for the b/s and I'm smashing it 120yrds and pulling up huge beds of weed on it.
Ended up getting some 'fake' powerpro and that was double the diameter of the spectra, so never used it.

Would the daiwa j x8 braid in 40lb be okay to use straight through? Wouldn't be casting over 100 yards

That should be absolutely fine, not had issues with anything up to 30 wraps with 40lb straight through.

Thank for all the advice and recommendations. Just one question, thinking of going straight through without leader. Most people saying 40lb straight though will be okay, but does the dia of the line matter as alot of 40lb braids are different. Thanks
