A mate had his alarmed garage smashed into and he lost a lot of top end gear. He was with Lloyds and said he couldn't fault them as they paid up to £5000.
I was with one insurance company (can't remember who because they deserve to be named and shamed) but when my garage was broken into, they took my bag containing some gear. They took details of what was stolen and offered to replace them but my Avon scales were to be replaced by a set of little sampsons which aren't in the same league and everything else was to be the "budget" option. Luckily I had written my name and phone number on the inside flap of the rucksack and I had a phone call a few days later as it had been dumped intact, expect the £20 emergency fund I kept in there.
Unfortunately you don't know how good your policy is until you claim. Check out some on-line reviews to if a Company is any good.
Best advice is to fit a decent lock and alarm system and hope you don't ever need to claim.

Most home insurance dont cover you away from the house and usually exclude you
In the car van etc
On the bank asleep
Always check it's new for old as some only give you the value is worth at the time

Anglers First Insurance - No idea if any good, but found them recently online. Think it's the same company Golf Guard use.

Thats why i chose this company. Its specific for angling so covers you on more stuff than general home insurance cover
just checked my policy the main points are, covered from van theft as long as it was locked, bank theft as long as i sleep 3 metre or less from my stuff, and 6 grand worth from shed theft

Did you have to list/prove what tackle you have for the policy? Some want receipts of purchases but I don't have any receipts

You have to list any individual item over 500 quid, other than that no. Most of my big stuff is/was bought online so I would have an email receipt some where if I needed it

In the result of a claim you have to provide receipts. You don't have to provide them to take the policy out though.
Always read all of the policy details thoroughly.

Hi just to say that my name is John, part of the reason for joining this forum is that I am a director at Anglers First Insurance (www.anglersfirstinsurance.co.uk) which is part of Golfguard Ltd, a specialist sports insurance company. We are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and have been selling fishing insurance for quite a few years now. Someone took up our insurance today who said they found out about us through Carp Forum so I thought it would be a good idea to sign up and see if anyone had any questions. If anyone ever does have anything please feel free to post and I will happily reply and follow up. Best of luck to everyone in the meantime in these difficult times.

Hey John , we've only just spoken on the phone .
I'm pleased to say that you answered all my questions I had and I was just taking a look at the feedback from others on the forum to see if it's a good policy to take.
Like most things and it's already been said , you only know how good a policy is when you have to claim and most of us hope we never need to . That said ,it look very competitive and well
tailored to the modern carp angler.
Best regards Paul

Thanks, will do - I went to the rules section first and couldn't see anything banning it and thought it would be ok to reply to a thread on it, especially as our insurance was mentioned and I thought it might be good for people to be able to know there is substance behind the company, but yes I will reach out to Karlos, thanks for pointing me in the right direction. John

Put it on your house insurance policy - no need what so ever to take out any kind of specialist insurance, especially given what they're all charging! Cost me peanuts to add to my home insurance... only had to claim once, when my car was stolen and I had some gear in it. Paid up immediately, in full (£1,200), no pissing around and I wasn't forced into using someone like Angling Direct either (watch out for that!). Gear is covered at home, in the car or on the bank for theft, loss, accidental breakages. Mine's with Aviva, but most of the big insurers offer tick boxes for it. Don't waste your money buying specific insurance for it! Cost me £30 extra a year to cover five grand of tackle... that's £2.50 a month

How do you manage to get it covered while in your car on your house insurance mate ?

Unless it is concealed in a locked boot, the vast majority of standard household policies will not cover your gear in the car.

Dangerous statement to make mate! Lots of areas on a standard household policy where you will not be covered....!!

Dangerous? Don't be daft... of course a standard Policy wouldn't over it, you have to add it to the Standard Policy! To the other point, yes, it was and still is covered for theft from vehicle up to a specified value. When I claimed for gear that was in the boot of the car, Direct Line paid out in a matter of days. Just a case of adding the right cover and checking the small print. Next time you shop around for house insurance, check it out, a lot of insurers offer all this and as I said, way cheaper than taking out unnecessary specialist cover.

OK mate, 26 years in Insurance....... I must be daft....
Not saying that a bespoke Angling Insurance policy is the answer at all but i have seen so many people think they are fully covered for their gear under a household policy and when it comes to a claim it's a different story.
Your gear in the car was covered because it was in the boot, if it wasn't in the boot, (seats down fully loaded in a car park at the lake or services on the way to France for example) chances are they wouldn't have paid out...
You are right though, check the small print and if in doubt ring them and ask them to put things in writing...

I'll be honest mate I have home insurance and cover for items taken away from the house under the same policy, I stupidly left my rod hold-all at a lake next to the car park by the time I got back it was gone, I called up Halifax and they paid out very quickly I had £1600 in the bank within 10/14 days I couldn't fault them at all for sorting that out

Was very happy with the service, I have heard some horror stories tho I have a friend whose care caught fire while driving to fishing and all his gear was in the back, the insurance only covered him upto £150 for car contents he didn't get any money for all the rest of it even on his home insurance. Lost out of £1000s worth of gear

After reading your post, I contacted my insurance and reading the confirmation email they sent me, turns out you were bang right after the guy asked his line manager about tackle. For me, its put down as contents insurance away from home.
Thank you for posting what you had, a great help 👍

Just watch out for small print exclusions like leaving the gear in your car, (unless concealed in a boot) and taking "reasonable care"....that one has tripped many a claim up for robbed fishing tackle left unattended, (which some class sleeping in your bivvy as).
Also, some policies have reduced limits for garages or sheds, another one to watch out for.

Just pulling your chain mate, good to see you have a sense of humour... By the way, you're wrong, as my gear was not specifically in the boot - it was 'in the car'. Seats were folded flat and in there were an unhooking mat, low chair and a sling with 3 rods/reels, landing net and sticks... I was going pike fishing the next day and car stolen at 4am, just an hour before I was due to get up. I suspect the crims had no idea that gear was in there. It was a 3 month old Audi RS4 - I had GAP insurance, so clawed back every penny (£70k). Direct Line didn't ask if the tackle was in the boot, in fact you'd need a big boot to get most rods in anyway - it was in the car, good enough for them to pay out and my current Policy with Aviva definitely covers me for theft from the car, no mention if it has to be in the boot or on the the front seat, what ever. Agree with you - check the small print, as I have almost renewed a Policy with another insurer and then seen a list of conditions in the event of a claim.

Thanks buddy, glad that helped. As everyone is saying, check the small print, as not all Policies offer the cover you need. I mentioned this to a mate yesterday and he claimed for a rod/reel that went over the side of the boat when he was trolling for pike - he was quite surprised to find the house insurance covered accidental loss of sport equipment - bingo, he claimed, they paid, albeit he had to pay a small excess.

You were lucky mate as I know for a fact the Direct Line wording 100% says that belongings in the car are covered only if the vehicle is locked, windows closed and items are out of view in a luggage compartment. It was probably the fact that your car was stolen that made the difference as they didn't actually break into the car to steal the items but stole the car instead!
I also know Aviva policies very well, which policy have you got with them because most of their policies have exactly the same wording...the high net worth products may be different but you pay a premium price for those...
