Does anyone have any experience of fixed/auto/permanent/ whatever you want to call them binoculars?
Any recommendations?

Ideally not too big and not too expensive (I will ruin them at some point).

Thanks mate but I tried that. They seem to be purists who are anti the fixed focus side of things!
They also tend to be star gazers, bird watchers, or hunters so have different wants and application needs to us angler's.

Nevermind. Ordered a set to try. If anyone reads this thread at a later date and wishes to know how I get on with them feel free to pop me a PM

Was there a particular reason for going fixed focus?

I had a cheap pair and just didn't get on with them, found my eyes straining a lot with closer objects just out of sharp focus. The amount of time I spent playing with the diopters I gave up and bought a focusing pair.
If you only want something for mid to long range you'll probably be fine.

I'd say hunters have very similar requirements to anglers buddy.

I use bushveld perma focus 10×50, perfect for fish spotting. Yes they are big and a bit heavy but I think they are worth it, great for long distance viewing on big waters

Do you wear glasses? Apparently they tend to be not as good with glasses.

Yep it's for mid to long range.
I fish a very large low stock water and find it hard to change focus quickly if I see a potential show across the lake, particularly if I'm up a tree!
I was hoping the permanent focus thing would be the perfect fix for this.

No I definitely don't know everything, hence me creating this post, but I do know that someone hunting has different requirements to myself
Again, hence my post.

I don't understand this. How does a fixed focus work? Do you buy them and then set them up for your own eyes? How does it work if you look at a close in object and then move to a far away object?

Basically everything from around 30/40 yards plus (depending upon brand and model) is in focus. This is because they have been made to have a very wide depth of field.
This is my understanding of them at least!

I can understand Depth of field @ 30/40 yds , but then what about 100yds +

Edit , just re reading it . so from 30/40 yds to lets sat 150 yds everything is in focus

I see, but I don't mind admitting I'm still a bit confused on how that would work in the real world. One of my mates has a nice set of binoculars that I had a play with last year. He was looking at what he thought was signs of fish at over 100yrds. Presumably in focus for him. He passed me the binoculars to get my opinion on whether the disturbance was a fish or birds, so we were looking at the same object and the same distance and I definitely had to refocus them for my eyes.

If we're getting technical, they are roughly set to hyper focal distance in photography terms, so sharpest focus might be 50yds but you can see anything from 30yds to infinity with a bit of eye straining.
I think the ones I had were praktica but I may be wrong, i bought them on a whim and got rid soon after.
They had the diopter adjustment on both eye cups which gives a bit of focus adjustment but not really enough for me.
I often use binos to watch a bait in clear water so I want to be able to focus at say 10-15 yards and these couldn't do that, just helps to isolate the hook bait when stalking, so I can choose whether to strike depending on which fish picks up the bait.
Replaced with some olympus 8x40 ones
Excellent but a bit bulky tbh

Nothing wrong with them at all.
I was just interested in a quicker/easier solution when scanning the water, particularly from up a tree whilst holding on for dear life
