Morning, I've recently joined a syndicate and the water depths range from 40ft to around 16ft.
I was wondering what the general rule is for clipping up your spomb to the depth your fishing? I know distance also makes a difference but I could do with someone with experience who has fished these depths to give me an idea.
Thanks

Have a search on YouTube for a film by Fox (i think) with Lee Morris and Rob Hughes.
They were examining this very thing and it was quite good. Can't remember the exact depths but sure it was anything 10-15ft or under then not worth adding anything on to alllow for swing back.
They basically marked a square target zone on the lake bed and Rob was down there in a diving suit and they were trying to get the lead in the zone by adding/taking away half a wrap, quarter of a wrap etc

It has also been done in various threads on here

Worth also thinking about the undertow

So many variables, wind being another. There is no exact calculation that can take account of all the variables so I just do what they say in the videos and not get to anal about it.
If I'm fishing somewhere near my chosen area than in most cases that's good enough for me

Definitely agree. There is an amazing amount of self delusion regarding accuracy. Too many variables to expect to work in inches. Maybe if you are on form a three foot circle at 50yds, 6 ft circle at 100yds and after that give it your best shot. Don't believe everything the "experts" say, stop worrying and enjoy your fishing.

Chuck a spod or whatever you are using out to the same as your rods
Take a step back and re chuck the spod to the same clip
Take a step to the left do it again
Take a step to the right do it again
Take another step back and repeat
Should cover any eventuality then.

Jolly good stuff. It's supposed to be fun. Could make the Hokey Cokey or the Timewarp fit those lyrics.

Just involved in a post about spodding accurately over your baited rigs. Now there is many factors thrown into this. But for me this is the most practical way and most accurate. Something I always do over small bait items.
Try this, Wrap up your marker rod at 20 wraps. Mark the line with elastic just past the top eye.
Wind the braid on the reel, stand in your casting spot cast out hit the clip. Keep your rod in the same position you usually do. Feel it down, tighten up. Look where the elastic is 👍
However far inside the tip the marker elastic has come, is how far it's swung back towards you.
That gives a good mark how short to clip up your spod rod.
This also shows where the elastic should be on all your fishing rods. If it's not in the same place your rods are not accurate 👊

Do I put my left leg in? My left leg out?

Sorry but if you hit the clip and feel the lead down properly on a tight braid the elastic should still be at the tip. You don't gain any line by the lead penduluming back on a tight line. If you have to tighten up you add that line to the amount you are already short and compound the error. Fishing at 100yd into 20ft water the dropback is 8ins with normal variables, not worth worrying about. Deep water/short range is different, 50yds into 50ft and its 8ftdifferent ball game. Thank you Pythagorus. Happy for someone to check my figures. I make mistakes. If. You are fishing over weed beds, bars plateaus etc just give it your best shot

Doesn't matter just make sure you shake it about

What would happen if you get a bow in the line during the cast? which sometimes happens with a crosswind

Unless you are fishing to a tight line you are not accurate. The bigger the bow, the bigger the error.

In some conditions it is inevitable that i would get a bow in the line and end up short of my spot but by marking the line i would then have a better idea of how far i was dropping short and adjust accordingly.

I would say fish to the conditions. You can't beat the weather, you have to fish round it. Whatever works for you.

Very good point if you are using pellets and particles they could hit bottom a long way from any boilies in your spod mix. Think about how you could use groundbait alongside some of the denser liquids to try to bind the mix, probably won't hold together beyond 20ft but it will help a lot.
