A barge to house 500 people when there are 160000 waiting to be processed? Almost as if the government are just clutching at straws and desperate to get anything on the TV to make it look like they're doing something.
Wouldn't the money be better spent increasing their capacity to process folk, so they'd either get refused asylum, or like the vast majority, be granted asylum and be free to go about their business, find a job, pay taxes and generally contribute to society?

Don't forget Rwanda.
I don't know know if throwing more money at something will speed things up if there are processes to go through, I can imagine it's challenging when folk have no passports.
All into work ?.
Look how many Syrian refugees whom came to Germany during the Middle East conflict, some 800,000 less than 40% are not supported by the state so it's clearly a tough economic challenge.

Ah - the 'talking sense' approach.
It'll never work.
The barge / distraction tactic is in addition to the hotels that serco (trying to keep things thread related) are sourcing. It's just this week's appeal to the easily duped. And another one with immediate numerous objections. As you say, if they actually sorted out the system rather than increasingly making it inaccessible then they might stop the boats as people wouldn't need to resort to that option.
It would appear that 1 - the government are employing another 'but look at this' policy and 2 - serco are again being paid for not doing the job they're supposed to be doing effectively. Who'd have thought it after their huge pandemic success?
