Im considering using chods on my local which is choked with weed.
I have used them in the past with lead core, but I am hesitant to use 6ft of lead free these days tbh.
What are the benefits or disadvantages of using one over the other?
For instance, I read that the hooking potential of lead core is superior to a naked setup?
Regarding a naked set up, is .40 mono suitable or must it be flouro?

If the weed is quite high and you want to present a bait on top of it, then I think leadcore could drag your bait into the weed. You may be better of using a chodanoster.

I think fishing the chod 5-6 ft away from the lead on a slack line will give you a bungee-effect that makes it very hard for the carp to eject the rig.
Like you I have fished chods on rather long pieces of leadcore and it has worked very well on cleanish bottoms or very low weed, but I'm not so sure it will work in heavy weed.

Cheers for the reply pal. The club have had a weedcutter in last week and the weed is now less of an issue!

I've used the naked chod on mono plenty of times, in fact I never use it on leadcore.
I've used it with the top stop as much as 10ft up the line and I'll regularly use it with leads as light as half an ounce.

I worry with chods that whilst I might feel the lead down through the water and it may feel like low lying weed, where the chod ends up further back up the line may well be hung up on a clump of weed, or up the side or over the top of a thicker weed bed.
On my lake, there are clearer areas, with clumps of weed here there and everywhere.
I have combated this by using solid bags cast into the clearer areas and whilst I have been catching plenty of tench with a few carp in-between I imagine that half of the time the bag is obscured.

I never feel the lead down when using the chod. I want to know that the hookbait is at the top stop for as long as possible on its descent through the water and will usually have a foam nugget on the hook as well. In my head, feeling the lead down will affect this.
