Caught a 30lb grassy the other day which was hooked in the top lip. The hookhold was bomber, but I am wondering why and how in the top lip?
Solid bags, close range, holes in the weed. 4" hooklength, size 5/6 hook, 2.5oz lead.
Simple rigs, with wafters (that barely waft) and just a shrink tubing kicker.
I thought it was a one-off, but i also got tenched out and hooked one of them in the top lip too?
Any ideas?

Sometimes it just ends up finding enough of a mouth skin hook hold there whilst it is being sampled/picked up/ejected.
I Wouldn’t worry too much, your location is spot on & they want to eat your bait, that’s the important bit, you are landing tench as well.

Try picking your rig up from the hair or whatever you use to attach the bait , pick it up from various angles the fish could approach from, when you pick it up the hook should hang straight down, if it doesn't try adjusting where the hair or swivel leaves the back of the hook , until the hook hangs down every time you pick it up , and from every angle !
As had been said you caught two so why worry , but two on the bounce is more than a coincidence and something probably needs a slight adjustment.

One of the rigs I have used a lot over the last 18 years or so hooks a lot of the fish in the top and sides of the mouth. On at least one water this was catching me fish that were getting away with standard bottom lip hooking rigs.

Fish can do strange things too, I have some carp in my pond, whereas all the carp feed in a normal manner, I have one that likes to feed with its body vertical doing a headstand and it moves about across the bottom like that in any direction. It makes me think that being in that position, it makes it easier to dig down into the silt with just a flick of its tail
