On the club water, the wind has dropped and I have carp head & shouldering over my baits...

I would suspect that they weren't head and shouldering as such, but hitting a fly hatch that just happened to be over your baited area.
I've definitely experienced this quite a few times over the years. A black zig in the upper layer leading to bites.

to be honest i couldn't tell if there was a hatch then or before, the wind had been gusting 35-40mph, swirling west-south west-north west all day and I was counting down the hour after sunset before I had to vacate the swim.
The carp were poking their heads out, silently coming past the gills, rolling, coming to the surface and showing a tail on the way back down.
As soon as the wind started to drop I had the binos out looking in tip of the flat spot from the willow next to me and couldn't see any bubbling or hatches on the surface.
Lots of tiny fry, the amount of pea mussels and zebras is crazy, a few times I've wound in to find a 3-4mm pea mussel on the tip of the hook or a clump of mini zebras.
Still- the run came off a bottom bait in 12ft of water
Another couple of weeks to the equinox and after that I may be barrowing down the track by feeding time.
