Watched a really great video the other night from an ex pat campaign fishing a big pit in Australia. Some mega fish and non were harmed. Well worth a watch!

Probably is, was the same in the US when I was younger, maybe not now.
There was talk about deliberately introducing KHV to sort the Carp 'problem' in Australia, was discussed on the forum a while ago iirc.

It depends where you are. In NSW it's not prohibited from returning them from where you caught them from. There does seem to be a push again to release KHV again in Victoria. That being said, I'm not sure how much traction that will get after COVID.
One thing that really irks me, is that they have just legalised Bowfishing, albeit with some rules; but we all know that rules are made to be broken.

Me and my expat mate did some under the radar carp fishing in Sydney, I think it is called Central Park. It was at night and we had to hide Every Time a car went past! We did catch a few though, nothing massive, but they do go to over 40lb in those lakes in the park.

Fished the lake in central Canberra a few times over the years. Very good near the sailing club. Early trips required killing the carp, so I didn't fish. They had carp events intended to reduce numbers: saw dozens caught and killed, sometime by pushing a bank stick through the head. Nasty I thought. Later it became a choice, so I happily fished and caught off the top and returned them. Nothing large but good Sport on fly tackle.

Fair Dinkum mate! You're are right. A quick check on Google confirmed it is in fact Centennial park. It was 10 years since I was there, I remember there are quite a few sizeable lakes at the park. I can recall seeing a massive owl flying around, then my mate told me it was a bat!! It was huge! Lol.

Seen some decent sized ones there last winter (Aus Summer) when I was over there on holiday, has to be some decent ones in there though surprised you managed to get away with it, saw more patrols in that park in one morning than 10 years of EA patrols in the UK!

Been in Sydney for 28 years and lived not far from there in the City Centre near Hyde Park.
Never saw any Carp at all in the lakes in Centennial Park but then I didn't spend that much time looking.
Saw plenty caught out of Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra at the annual carp catching event they used to hold there every year. The day before, large skips were dropped around the lake at various points and everything caught went into them to be taken away to be turned into fertilizer.
Most fish caught were in single figures. Not sure if the event is still held these days.
The bats, or Flying Foxes, have a wingspan about 3 feet or so. There used to a colony of a few thousand that roosted in the Botanic Gardens which would have been where the one you saw came from, and there is another colony near where I live now in the Northern suburbs. Big *******s, but they only eat fruit ...

Unfortunatly there are groups down here like australian carp slayers and carp killers australia who go out at weekemds just to kill carp
They do monitor social media, that venue is not too hard to figure out, so posting it on the internet is a bit irresponsible.
A Chap caught a lovely 43lb mirror in november and posted a pick with the venue showing in the background, within 3 weeks carp slayers were bragging theyd caught and killed it
Sad, but its the reality of living where i do

Carpageddon is a phrase that Australians use to describe to final eradication of Carp from Australia altogether. Not sure it was the name of the event held in Canberra.
There have been plans to release the KHV virus on the cards for about 10 years, but it has yet to happen.
There is no doubt that overall, the species causes damage throughout Australia. The environment is conducive to rapid spread, in much the same way that other species have also spread (Cane Toads, Rabbits, Foxes, Ferrel Cats, Wild Pigs, Goats, Camels, Horses ...).
Applying the UK moral point of view on catch and return of what is literally an invasive species doesn't work when it comes to argue the point with the local population or law enforcement agencies.
