Have just brought some ESP quick change swivel lead clips and I'm scratching my head as to how they work.
The lead clip has a fixed swivel eye one end to to attach your mainline, and the other end a Quick link swivel to attach a your rig. It's all fixed inside the lead clip and doesn't seem to come out at all ( guess that's part of the design )
However whenever I have fished lead clips previously the lead clip sits snugly over a swivel so that it will aid in hooking the carp but on a violent take or when snagged the swivel will release from the lead clip allowing it all to be free running, but these seem to create a potentially dangerous bolt rig?
Am I missing something?
Feels like on a take the fish will now drag the lead around 100% of the time (unless it drops off the clip) where as before often the clip would release from the swivel allowing the fish on a take to have a free run as such.
Also if I was to have a snap off, previously the clip could have easily released the rig and the lead where as now unless the lead clip drops the lead then the fish will definitely be dragging the lead as well?

Yep, when a lead clip pops off the swivel it becomes dangerous as the tail rubber can become jammed on by debris as the clip slides back down the line. Having it fully fixed like the ones you've just bought stops the chances of that happening ( as long as the angler doesn't force the tail rubber on too hard as with all clips). They are way safer than the ones that become free running

This design of lead clip is to ensure the swivel and lead clip cannot separate!
This means that you cannot vary the way the lead clip can act, so cannot be a semi fixed lead clip set up, as you described.
In weedy or snaggy situations its important to set the end tackle up so it can easily drop the lead, and it must be tested before chucking in...
This will mean the tail rubber is very lightly pushed on so that the lead can be dropped on (or very soon after) the take, or alternatively the tail rubber can be pushed on a bit further so it can release if the fish were to plough into any heavy weed.
I still prefer a normal swivel and lead clip that can separate so I can fish semi fixed.
I can also secure the lead clip to swivel should I need to drop the lead so I have more flexibility.
I drill a small hole with a nut drill so I can tie the swivel into the lead clip when needed.
This is just like the old nash clips that I used to use before companies started adding the little pins to secure the swivel
The back end of my lead clips doesn't have the ridges like the korda ones so the tail rubber can slide off if the lead goes through heavy weed.
