Hi, any recommendations for a good buoyancy vest? I will only use it once a year, so don't want to pay top dollar if poss. TIA

I bought a Seago Active 190 Lifejacket - Auto, Navy for £74.95, and a refill kit (£21.95) from the marine super store.
They have videos on YouTube and once I'd viewed them I also phoned the shop and spoke to someone in depth about exactly what I wanted.
At the end of the day it's not a lot to save your life, even if you do only use it once a year (the refills are good for 5 years)

Look at the Baltic Mist Boyancy vests. Inexpensive and does the job. Comes in green also and comfortable.
Don't need anything more if you are a capable swimmer

No one is a capable swimmer if they're unconscious.
If a boat goes over and it, or something cracks you on the noggin you'll be glad you had a proper lifejacket on.

Clearly we use our boats in different circumstances. Ive had my boat out in 30mph winds and with a 65lbs trolling motor I fail to see any way how the boat can roll over. That scenario seems extreme to me.
But each to their own, the OP asked for a reasonably priced Boyancy aid and I gave him one 👍

I agree that capsize is highly unlikely but not impossible but there are many circumstances where you could enter the water unexpectedly and become incapacitated, heart attacks, fainting,dizzy/ funny turns can happen to anyone at anytime, slips trips and falls can also happen at anytime particularly when getting in and out of the boat,chances are your hands will be full and maybe only your head will break your fall.
They're called lifejackets for a reason, if you ever hire a boat on a trout lake for example they always insist on a proper lifejacket not buoyancy aids.
Not worth scrimping on a piece of kit that could mean the difference of you going home to your family or not.

You can get a Crewsaver Crewfit Sport 165N for around £75 in self-inflating configuration with a crotch strap. Generally well regarded, reliable if serviced and enough buoyancy for anything you're likely to be wearing whilst fishing.
I use one for lure fishing from a boat and find it comfortable to wear all day with minimal bulk /unrestricted movement.
