Last year I bought a set of 13ft Hi's Ives and matching spod rod. The have had light use since I got them as they were purchased for long range work on a lake that I am fishing at the moment and they do the job very well.
They are the black build ones with the black collars on the clone reel seats and I have noticed that the black seems to be rubbing off on the collars I have probably only used them 6 times and I really look after my kit so assume this is rubbing off with use. Is there any way to prevent this happening or is it inevitable they will end up patchy at some point soon ?

The paint primarily wears off in the rod bag. It is recommended to wrap them in neoprene wraps or a similar protective material. However, over time, they will inevitably become scratched and worn, as is the case with all black-painted reel fittings, except for anodized ones such as the Alps.

I got some reel seat wraps from peak angling products on the bay which stop this happening, well worth the few quid and they have a little elastic loop to hold reel handles in transit.

Just go over them with a Sharpie and live a life of low OCD.

Ahh I see I didn't realise they were painted. Doesn't seem like a particularly durable finish that tbh. I have had rods in the past with black collars on the reel seats ESP Terry Hearn MK2 for example and never had any issues with the black rubbing off. Seems like a very cheap component for such a high end rod.

Its happened to my blck fuji reel seats. I was advised against them by kev clayton when he made my rods but went for them anyway. Scratches add a bit of character

A lot of seats are now in a painted finish which is prone to chipping and marking whereas the older seats were produced via vapur disposition i believe, its probably a cheaper way to do things

One of the reason i never get black hoods on sears as it always comes off and looks crap. My ocd could deal with that especially if your paying over £1500 for a set of customs. You can just change them either.
