Brought some paste at the weekend. Opened the tub is rock hard. Is there a way of to soften it up again in to a dough

Rock hard, hmm. I would have said add some liquid of your choice and try and re knead but it sounds like that might not work. You could try a quick blast in the microwave, not ti cook it but it might draw the moisture (what's left of it) to the surface but if it really is totally dry that might not be a good idea.
Failing that, put some liquid in the tub, reseal, maybe shake to coat, and leave it to draw the liquid in. Adding liquid freezing and thawing will also draw liquid in.
I'd take it back

Just split the ball of paste to make it easier to work, then work a bit of hydro into it.

if you use a liquid, choose something that can be left on a shelf & doesn't need refrigeration - it will help keep the paste fresher for longer. adding water or fresh ingredients can create mould on pastes in days which can be frustrating - especially on new tubs.
