This may be a really stupid question but do you have to take into account the depth you are fishing at when using distance sticks? For example, if I have found a spot 80 yards out with the marker rod and it is 12ft deep - do I need to wrap the sticks 20 times or 21? I am just thinking that when I cast and it hits the clip won't it swing 4 yards towards me until it hits bottom?

Won't make any difference clipping up to the marker rod, will do for spombing though.

It won't fall back 12ft.
The way the lead swings back does depend on how you feel the lead down, if you hold the rod still at 45 degs it will swing back more than if you follow the lead down with the rod tip.
