I have used a mates when we were on the trent. Works OK and retrieves OK.
I have seen reports that they are a bit flimsy.
Quite a few lads have made home made diy conversions of china spombs that work just as well.

No, they come back just fine.
I found that once you have dropped the bait, hold the line tight and the water pressure/flow will lift the thing to just under the surface; it's then a simple thing to reel in.

Do they work on soft bottoms?

Whilst the Korum ones do work (as per the original Spomb spopper conversions) and the addition of weights is useful they do and eventually will crack as the housing is much less elastic / more brittle than the conversions.
Conversions more expensive but last indefinitely (I haven't smashed one up yet) Ideal for getting bait to the bottom quickly and in running water - I use a 10' SPM and its perfect

They retrieve just fine once opened. However. If your fishing clay, mud or silt then don't waste your money as they do not open. I have the large and small. Wanted for roach fishing big pits at distance. No matter what I have tried they do not open, they are junk.
