I've been looking at a set of reels for my long distance rods (hi's ive er) currently have weston development upgraded 5000t which I like but am thinking of putting these on my short range rods. The aero technium black mags everyone seems to rave about, from what I've heard they have modern features but are still better built than newer reels. Have previously considered a set of basia or the new aero technium (looks huge and I hate the line guard thats the same as my ultrgra) but feel like I would be happier which the black mags I have a few questions. Is the drag smooth and how is the baitrunner cap or is it worth getting the weston speed cap and washers or does it make the drag too quick. Are parts hard to get if I have a problem and I normally have 3 pairs of spools (fish 2 rods) for my line, are the reel king spare spools worth getting saw some people say they aren't that good and most I've seen come with one spare spools and can't find any spare shimano spools. I've seen sets of 3 for sale I was thinking about getting a set of 3 to have the spools and then having a spare reel. I was also looking at the new ultregra xr reels as they seem to be comparable to the blacks mags for weight and size but I have a ultrgra xte spod reel and it doesn't feel as robust hence why I'm looking at older reels.

I have a set of the XR Ultegra...lovely reels.
Had al the techniums,basia's etc...These are in the same league performance wise...
I hated the baitrunnerknob on the Mgs XTB's..
Also performance wise the XR are no different, like you say, buy a old reel, no parts etc.
Or buy a new one, with a decent drag ( not to quick , half a turn).
I would go for the newer Ultegra's.
Spoolwise, all ultegra , power aero spools fit these..

Have the mgs12000 XTB, with weston speed caps, great reels, smooth drag.
Also own the new power aero 14000 XTC, same quality, same weight & drag out the box, 😊

Does the ultregra xr feel as rugged as the aero tech, my ultregra xte spod is a year old and although he has been used a lot it's definitely not as smooth as when I first got it I also took it apart and cleaned it too. Also have you had any problems with the plastic line guard on my spod reel it pops out regularly.

Never had a problem with any of the reels, a spodreel gets hammered.
Where fishing for carp, not sharks...;-)

I use the black mags, the 12000 XTB's and mine must be a good 10 years old now and still as good as new. The drag is smooth and I have no issues at all with the bait runner spools but I got used to them as I previously had a set of 12000 XTA's. I have fitted the carbon washers and use three different sets of spools for different situations since I do a bit of moggy fishing.
Can't see me changing, I don't like the newer models which look huge.

Ended up finding a pair of aero mgs xtb that had been looked after and came with shimano normal drag caps and the original baitrunner caps. I knew if I got the ultregras I wished I'd got the techniums also found a lot of spares on ebay and weston has some spare gears. I also think I found some 6000 spools to get me my 3 pairs. Thanks everyone for the advice.
