I saw someone using a stiff hinge rig with a helicopter setup. Could anyone tell me what the advantage of this is over just using a chod?

You have loads more movement in a hinge than a chod. If mr carp sucks @ a hinge it it'll fly up into their mouth cavity much more easily than a chod will.
Chods are fantastic for fishing over substrates that no other rig will present on, but if you can get away with fishing a rig with a boom it'll out-perform a chod all day imo.
