Definitely worth asking John what he'd recommend with Bio Shellfish. Ala Salar and Plum are a great combo to get started that he suggested to me.

I knocked up some krill hook-baits using the plum at recommended levels, although the top of the level. When I went to test to it in a pond stuffed with carp I could barely get one to take it, then when one did it spat it straight back out. I then put out singles of various boilies and a few pellets (one by one) and they all went immediately. I guess the logical thing to do would have been knock up another batch with less flavour but it put me right off. Just a heads up really on not overdoing it.
I've used the frost and flood flavour to good effect for barbel in cold water and am thinking of making some carp hookbaits this spring.

I often wonder this, when you see most carp companies recommending to glug your hookbaits until they are completely saturated. This year I have caught the majority of my fish on a completely dull, plain washed out red (matching bait colour) rock hard hook bait, and just couldn't get a bite on other baits that should in theory out fish everything. It's really messed my brain up this year. The problem i have is said hookbait maker is no longer doing them so im looking for a replacement.
I have been very stuck in my ways fishing heli rigs for yrs but have swapped to solid bags 50% of the time due to the low laying weed, and they just seem to catch more on my syndicate. I now have about 100 hookbaits and find myself chopping and changing trying to find one that works.
Watching the recent fox underwater video has not helped 😂😂 although I do like a washed out pink hookbait if I'm going to use colour which seemed to give the best results underwater. It's all relative though, on that particular lake, that particular day and time of Yr etc etc..

I mainly fish dark or glugged hook baits now as the water I'm fishing is shallow enough for birds to dive and sometimes enough for swans to be inquisitive by knecking the freebies and are a danger in picking up your bright hook bait rather than a dark one, works well for me so I tend to stick to what I know,on other hand I go for a bright hook bait on the canals from April till September knowing I can stop the carp and hopefully they investigate
First question I'd ask is what was wrong with last years bait?
Find a bait you're confident in and stick with it, don't change because we've entered a new year.

100% This.
Don't get caught up in theory and marketing.
One downside to a certain podcast, as much as it's a great listen, is it gets the brain matter going and you start experimenting. Good in some ways, but only if you can ensure it's the bait and fault and not your ability or the circumstances.

First thing to be blamed when the bobbins do not move is the bait.
You have to fish with a bait for more than a weekend to work out if it's good or not.
Yes there is really good bait out there and god awful stuff too. But like you said it's important to realise that the person in control of the rod is normally the biggest influencing factor to the end result!

Yup totally agree, I think I mentioned , the hookbaits I was previously using I can no longer get ahold of as the guy has stopped making them.
I haven't changed the actual feed bait I'm using.
Agree about location but I did fish side by side as well before I ran out of those hookbaits and it was always those I caught on.
I have a suspicious its more to do with Buoyancy balance of the rig as that rig was very well balanced as the hookbait was bigger. I am fishing this weekend and intend to make some tweaks to the rig but will really focus on location. Hopefully I can get things working for me again.
To put into perspective, I had not blanked for over a year previously and I am now going into my 8th night without a fish, could be coincidence and time of year etc etc.. fishing is a funny old game, so many variables. Better to chop and change if you're going to in the summer months.
