I fish a syndicate of lakes that has carp to 40lb and sturgeon to the same size (but very hard fighting).
Currently, I put three rods (3.25lb tc) out to middle of the lake. And a fourth to margins. Don't need to cast far for this margins rod, but need some power in case one of those bigger fish bites.
The fourth is currently a 1.5lb specimen rod, that I think that I need to upgrade. My current thinking is a 3lb (maybe 2.75), sticking with 12ft since the banks have a lot of trees that the fish will dive under. I would also like to add a new 6000 size reel with that, preferably with baitfeeder (freespool) function.
And my budget for the pair is 200 quid (yeah....
).
First, am I right in my logic : current 1.5 tc rod is too weak?
And if so, what rod and reel?
Thinking about a Nash X series, or Shimano TX-1 for the rod.
No ideas about the reel. I see Soniks, Advantas, etc in the budget range, but hear bad things about Sonik reel robustness. I have a Fox EOS 10000 FS and not impressed by the robustness. A bit wary with budget reels after my experience with this Fox.

Personally I'd be looking at the secondhand market for both rod and reel.
2 3/4lb Ballista, Armalite, X-lite etc. Something with a reasonably through action. Reel wise, a Shimano 10000xte or similar if you definitely want a baitrunner. Ultegra 5500 if not.

Agree that a Ballista would be perfect for that. And you should be able to get one fairly cheap. I picked up a pair of 2.75lbs on facebook marketplace for £100. Reel wise you could get a new Okuma that would be absolutely fine. £200 should get you a set up that's a lot of fun to use.
