I have suffered three hook pulls out of ten bites on helicopter rigs . Just wondering if a lead clip arrangement might increase my odds for fish landed on a water where bites are hard to come by . Has anyone had a similar experience with hook pulls using helicopter rigs , thanks .

Are you dropping the leads with both arrangements?

Bit of everything to be honest . Always liked the versatility of a heli and used them forever. Been using a coated hook link on a German bottom bait or wafter . The last two hook pulls have however been on Gemini ronnie booms with the ring fishing a wafter . To be fair the fish landed have been well hooked . It maybe just one of those things but trying to see if I can tweak them a little .I've been looking at the rig itself wondering whether a lead clip might be better . Also fishing a ring on the Ronnie with a wafter - could this have an effect ??? Lastly as I've been fishing fairly close in I've been using 2oz flat pears to keep the disturbance down , probably help with a bigger lead , thanks.

Just use a thickish uncoated braid with wafters eg dark matter.

IMO stiff booms may give funny hookholds depending upon the direction the fish comes from and takes the bait. More chance of hooking in the scissors.

I experienced exactly that many years ago which is the last time I used Heli setups. Fishing a fairly easy club water one winter I was landing everything I hooked, fancied giving Heli setups a go so switched over and started dropping fish, and the ones I landed the hookholds weren't very good. Switched back to a leadclip setup and went back to landing everything. I kept the hooklinks the same on both setups, aswell as the baits so I figured it was the Heli setup to blame.

when I first started using the ronnie rig I suffered a few hook pulls, I was using smaller baits and size 6s, I read on here about using bigger baits and I upped my hook size I now use the Gemini booms, size 4 mugga and 18mm hook baits on my ronnie rig with a heli set up eprks.a.treat.
my wafter rig and go to rig all the time if I can is a flouro d rig with a size 4 mugga,16 or 18mm wafter on a heli set up as I fish silty waters....

Touch wood I've had a great hook to land ratio this year on the ronnies , 12-14mm hookbaits

I try where possible to fish a really tight clutch like one or two clicks off locked up this has certainly made the takes more savage and causing deeper hook holds. Lost 3 or 4 fish this year in total and everyone has been in heavy weed. Not one otherwise.

Don't go too stiff with booms is another key, use a supple as possible for the situation. Longer range I increase the stiffness. A longer more supple boom has made for better deeper holds.

Also try a different hook pattern, most opt for curves but I much prefer a beaked wide gape

Thanks for the replies . I should have mentioned that I've been using a size 4 mugga which normally stay in . I'm going to try one thing at a time so ordered some hybrid lead clips . I'm going to try these on one rod and take it from there . Thanks for your help 👍

All i can say is if bites are hard to come by use a running rig. And you'll probably be the only one doing so
