My Shimano reels are several years old now and still very functional.
Although it's probably about time i gave them a good clean and applied some fresh new grease.
Would Lithium grease be suitable?

Yes, but General purpose bearing grease is better.
Edit: just reading up, lithium grease has better waterproof and high heat capabilities but might be too thick for fishing reels.

Don't use lithium based grease mate.
As a lifelong mountain biker, trust me when I say it cakes up and goes hard.
Whoever thought lithium grease was a good idea also invented the Reliant Robin, FBI bite alarms and chocolate fireguards.

I'll 2nd that, reels are an “Enclosed gearbox”; a semi-fluid grease should be used as it constantly renews itself as it flows about with movement.

Cal's drag grease from Jim's reel shop or Ebay. Bit more expensive than generic options, my thinking was I won't need more than that anyway and by the time I come to use it again it'll be rancid or lost
