Have just spooled up with 12lb touchdown on my basia's which is still 0.35mm my question is as basia's are effectively marketed as distance casting reels why on earth did they make the spools so shallow, 190m of 0.35mm only 200yds of line just doesn't seem a lot really

I think most people using them for distance work are fishing really low diameter braid. My Basias for long range work have .08mm hold 300m easily

Sure when I had basia's they held more then it said on the box ,think it was near two forty which your not going to cast with a baited rig. Why make a reel as light weight as possible then add weight with more line than is needed. Shimano had it right with the original Tec 10k's which came with a 10k spool for boat work and 6k for casting but have gone backwards since making them bigger and bigger and dropping the smaller spool in favour of cheap plastic reducers.

I agree with you but an example a lake I fish has a few swims that are a 120yd cast to pretty much where the carp hang out. The lake is 500yds across in places say I have cast the 120yds which I can(singles only can't accurately hit that with a spomb) that only leaves 80 or so yards, on that lake I have had some savage takes where the fish has gone on a run like that I'm not saying it needs 400m of line on it but a bit more than that haha

Just fish a tight clutch with the rod properly secured, never understood why people allow a fish to run easily on a take as it's all to easy for it to find a snag.

To be honest the spools sound like the perfect size for what you need? They hold the 120 you will use and 80 yards is a lot of back up.
