How much oil (e.g. hemp oil, or salmon oil) can a hook bait take on until it's either pointless or detrimental?

impossible to say as it depends on what other ingredients are in the hookbait and whether they contain oil.

Not sure if he still does, but Ian Russell of Heathrow Baits used to store his own hookbaits completely submerged in sunflower oil.
