Hi,
I have seen a few posts saying since the change of ingredients DNA S7 isn't as effective as it use to be.
I did well on it a few years ago and have an order waiting for a upcoming French trip.
I'm wondering if I should switch to the Bug.
Anyone still recommend S7 over the bug ? I know they are both good baits but it seems now the bug is the top bait to go for.

I think most baits with Robin Red in them took a hit when that was changed, i was a big S7 user before that.
The bug certainly is the one where all the marketing money is getting thrown at, personally I never did well on it, and after listening to a few people like John Baker say that insect meal isn't good for baits.....I lost faith in trying it any further. However I personally know a few peolle who do really well on it.

Cheers, I will stick with s7 as Im sure its still top quality and I have done well on it in the past.
I never thought there was much difference in bait between the different companies but last season my catch rate dropped off and the only change was using a bait I got on a good deal from a small bait firm so now with stick with the bigger boys.

Could be wrong here but isn't the change in robin red/ s7 only the dye , gone from a chemical dye to a natural one , which doesn't stay in the bait as well. 🤷🏼♂️ Other than that it's the same ????

Regarding S7 colour, i queried this with DNA before and received the following reply...
"You are correct in the issues you have highlighted regarding the red dye etc. We have always found that the new dye (red beet powder which is now used in Robin Red and the similar versions on the market) can be very temperature intolerant. With it being high in carbs/sugar it can be affected by the Maillard effect which causes browning during cooking and in reaction to proteins. We try and keep the colours as stable as we can during the process but it has been almost impossible to keep the colour consistent batch to batch since the change took place. The batches can vary even to even at what point in the day the bait was rolled due to a build-up of dye in the cooker. It was much easier in the days of insoluble pigment dyes I can tell you!
We have been tweaking things a little and have found that lowering the PH can help buffer this effect so I think we are almost back to a more consistent and longer lasting red. It isn't ideal I know but the fundamentals of the bait are no different even though the colour change may be a little off putting. I hope this has gone some way to explain the issue but if you need any more info please don't hesitate to get in touch."
I felt reassured by such a candid response, which in the world of baitmaking is not always the case...

I love The Bug. Have taken it to waters that have not seen it before and the carp have revisited the spots, let alone munched the lot. Up until last year I used particle exclusively for about three years as no boilie on the planet came close to fermented maize. However, when needs must, I use The Bug with the same level of confidence.
