Modern high end carbon rods (harrison,century) dont need breaking in and should not soften.

Modern rods shouldn't need breaking in. Also, modern rods shouldn't soften with use. In the 80's, I did have an old set of cheap Daiwa rods that started as fast taper but ended up much softer after hurling deadbaits out for a few winters. But I put this down to them being cheap and also it was a long time ago. I have loads of sets of rods now, including some Armalites MkI from the early 90's, and I can't say that I've noticed any of them getting softer over time.
You could ask Jeffire on here, he builds rods so he'll have a more accurate idea.
