Is there such a thing as a company who hired out echo sounders? I'm off to France in a month or so and although I have a deeper chirp I would imagine life would be easier with en echo sounder when being used from an actual boat. I don't really want to fork out 300/400/500+ for something I'm unlikely to ever use again.
I've seen some cheaper ones on ebay / amazon but presume you get what you pay for with something like that.

Assuming you are on a private pay lake have you tried the venue? Lakes that allow boats will often rent you equipment.
I agree that a proper echo set up like a Raymarine will be worth it over a deeper.

To be honest Reuben you wont need one at the lake we've been discussing I certainly wouldnt worry about having one with me a Nash prodding stick will tell you everything you need to know which is a silty bottom in the main and no weed at all, the water in quite a turbid colour so not much depth of clarity.
In or on shallower lakes 15 feet or less I generally only use my prodding stick nowadays four sections is enough for this I have marked the stick from the bottom up in foot increments with a white paint marker so visually I can see depths straight away you can gauge depth of silt when you push it on in, when I find an area i'm happy with I'll drop a H block and prod around the area leaving the prodding stick pushed in on the favoured area I then finally position a marker pole at the back of the area in line with the stick and bank, I sort my spots first like this and bait them at the same time according to how I'm fishing each of the spots, when taking the rig out then I push the prodding stick into the bottom on the spot drop my rig alongside this with a small handful over the top pull the prodding stick up and back to the bank with the rod.
Top tip for a prodding stick put a net float around it at the top under the orange foam handle because if they list over in the lake they will sink out of sight or if they roll off the boat which I had happen many years ago trolling out a few hundred yards to a spot and never even new it had until I got out to the marker looked around behind me for the prodding stick and it had disappeared, I spent an hour with a grappling hook I fashioned bank side going back and forth trying to locate it.
